  • Large Items: Regularly scheduled pickup on the first Saturday of the month. Call David Pollard to arrange for pickup at other times.
  • Recycling: Receptacles for mixed glass, plastics (HDPE 1 & 2 only), and cans (aluminum and steel) are put out on Tuesdays and collected on Wednesdays. Newspapers (securely tied with string or bagged in paper, not plastic) and broken down corrugated cardboard may be left beside the receptacles.
  • Mixed paper (junk mail, office paper, envelopes, etc.), catalogs, and magazines are accepted at the Arlington County Recycling Center, Four Mile Run at Columbia Pike.

Don't forget about the change in the water. As of November 1, 2000, the Washington Aquedu-ct will begin using chloramine in addition to chlorine to disinfect our water. This does not affect regular daily use of water but it will affect fish tanks and fish ponds. The change will occur on November 1, 2000 and there is a great deal of information available on the web, including information on how to prepare your fish tank or pond. In addition, the contact for questions from Arlington County residents is Perry Sasser at (703) 248-6578. The website for information on use of chloramine is: www.co.arlington.va.us/dpw/wss/wquality/cloramin.htm

Budget Approved. The budget proposed by the Board was passed at the annual budget meeting held on September 28th.

Fairlington Historical Society presents "an Evening with Catherine Fellows" on October 12th. Ms. Fellows is the author of "Fairlington at Fifty." There will be a reception to following her talk followed by the First Annual Meeting of the Fairlington Historical Society including the election of the Board of Trustees. The event is scheduled for Thursday, October 12th at 7:30 p.m. at the North Fairlington Community Center. For more information, go to the website at www.fairlington.org or call Ron Patterson at (703)931-0687.

Pool party goers. There were some left over containers and utensils from the last pool party. If you think you may have left something behind, please give Dave Pollard a call.

Correction for Phone Number for fire alarm installation. The phone number for the contact for the Arlington County Fire Department in the last newsletter was incorrect. If you are interested in getting a fire alarm and having it installed at no charge, call Capt. Mike Smith at (703) 228-3600, ext. 9263.

Cold weather preparation. As we prepare for winter remember to turn off your outside water faucets to prevent frozen and broken pipes. The shutoff valve for the backyard water is under the kitchen sink, and the shutoff valve for the front faucet is next to the water heater. Once you turn off the valves you should open the faucets to let the standing water drain out. You may leave the faucets open.

Landscaping Update from the VP for Grounds: The spring bulbs for the 4 new planting beds have been ordered. There will be tulips (yellow, scarlet, salmon, rose), a narcissus mixture (yellows and whites), muscari (dark blue and bright blue), scilla (blue), hyancinths (pastel colors), anemones (blue, pink and white), fritillaria (purple and white), and allium (vivid violet). The nursery says it will ship the bulbs in late October. The landscape committee is anticipating that the bulbs will arrive in time for planting on Saturday, November 4, weather permitting. The committee welcomes planting help by interested residents. Because this date is tentative, we suggest that you either contact a member of the landscape committee as the date approaches, or if you live near one of the beds, keep your eyes open and if you see persons with shovels and bags, come lend a hand.
