Fairlington Glen Newsletter Two vacancies occurred on the Board of Directors with the departure of Sue Roy in January and Melissa Giles in February. At the March 28th meeting, the Board appointed John Fuller and Bob Patrician to fill these vacancies until the formal election at the November Annual Meeting. John will serve as the Board Secretary and will prepare this newsletter, and Bob will serve as the Building and Grounds Committee Liaison. If you need to contact them, you can do so as follows:
TENNIS COMMITTEE Glen activity passes are being distributed. The new lock combination to the tennis courts and the paddle tennis court is on the back of the activity passes. The effective date for the new combination is April 3rd. A few new Glen folks have been confused about opening the locks on our courts. After dialing the combination, they pull down on the lock; instead, one must push down on the shackle (the "U-shaped" part); the lock will spring open - - note that when the gate is locked, this is equivalent to grasping the lock at the bottom and pushing up. Over the last year, there has been vandalism to the sign-up stands at our courts. The plexiglass doors on the stands have been broken with a rock or hard instrument. This is costly, both in time and materials. If anyone spots this (or other) such destructive juvenile behavior, please note their description and call Willard Smith at 578-1076 (tennis courts) or Kennan Garvey at 820-3523 (paddle tennis court). Our tennis rules are posted at our courts. Note that the tennis courts are only for TENNIS. Occasionally, children ride bicycles or big-wheels, hang on the nets, play baseball or hockey, climb the fences, etc., and adults run their dogs on the courts. While this behavior, unlike that noted in the paragraph above, is not intended to result in damage, it does. Hard-material wheels or dog claws cause scratches in (and subsequent flaking of) these painted surfaces. Bicycle riding (and braking) results in black marks on the courts. Climbing or hanging on fences pulls the fence attachments away from the fence poles. Hockey play scrapes the color-coated top surface off. Damage to the courts, nets, and fences adds to condo fees. In cases of identifiable damage, the responsible individuals or their parents can be billed. Sign-up sheets are now posted for weekend play and will also be posted weekdays once sufficient daylight exists to permit play until 7 p.m. LOGO COMPETITION The Board is considering using a logo on Glen-related items such as the newsletter and web page. We are therefore starting a competition to select an appropriate logo. All residents are invited to submit proposals for the logo (computer generated graphics in .gif format or neatly drawn representations) by May 1st to Kennan Garvey. They can be slipped under his door or sent by email to garvey73@erols.com. The Board will select the winning design at its May monthly meeting. The winner will receive a $50 award. Ongoing and planned projects related to Glen maintenance are as follows:
The crew and I wish you a happy spring. TRASH PICKUP FOR MAJOR ITEMS. Large items that you need to dispose of will be picked up on the first Saturday of every month. They must be placed on the curb at the street by 9 a.m. These pickups are free. Please do not put large items out at any other time ... THEY WILL NOT BE PICKED UP. PATIO TRASH. Spring has arrived and we really appreciate residents taking care of their patios. However, please remember that any debris and trash placed outside the patio gate, near the community trash barrels, and on the lawn will not be picked up. Please keep these items in your patio overnight and place them in front of your unit for the morning trash pickup. Remember courtesy is contagious ... please be considerate of your neighbors and help to maintain the looks of the Glen. PRIVACY. There have been instances of children who have jumped over locked fences to retrieve balls or other items that inadvertantly ended up in a patio area. The patios are for the exclusive use of the respective unit owners and this behavior is not acceptable. If you need to retrieve something that has ended up in someone else's patio, knock on their door and ask permission. If the unit owner is not at home, please leave a note and ask them to call when retrieval of the item is convenient for them. HANDBOOK. All residents and co-owners are reminded to review the Fairlington Glen Handbook occasionally since it provides essential information to ensure that you and your neighbors enjoy the wonderful experience of living in the Glen. All Glen meetings are held in the Fairlington Community Center at 3308 South Stafford Street. All residents are welcome.
The Fairlington Glen Newsletter is a communication channel by which the Board of Directors disseminates information to Glen residents and co-owners. Please provide any comments or recommendations to the Board Secretary, John Fuller, at fairlingtonglen@aol.com, or to any other Board member, prior to the monthly Board of Directors meeting. |
