Fairlington Glen Newsletter No substantive issues or contract awards. Funding was approved for the purchase of new shutters for the courts in the current paint cycle. (Kari Doyle ... Pool Committee Chairperson) The pool season is off to a great start. To keep things going smoothly, the pool committee would like to offer a few important reminders. As we recently learned, and have been told by our pool company, young children -- rather than babies in diapers -- sometimes have a difficult time controlling their bodily functions in the pool (sometimes the kids accidentally poop in the pool). To help protect against this health hazard and keep the pool from closing, please remember the following:
Please remember that children under 8 who have passed the swim test still require parental supervision while they are in the deep end. Finally, come enjoy the 4th of July at the pool! Our wonderful lifeguards will have games and activities at 2:00, and the pool will close at 8:00 to allow everyone a chance to watch the fireworks! Thanks for helping to keep our pool safe, clean and FUN!!! WATERING. Residents are requested to water the lawns that border our glorious street trees. The long, hot days of summer are upon us and our trees need your help. Please water the lawns that border the Willow Oaks where the root structures grow. Watering the mulch under the trees or placing hoses next to the trunks does not allow the trees to take in any water ... placing a sprinkler along the front and side yards that border our trees allows the roots to receive water. We made this same request last year and had a marvelous response ... please help us again. This is your community and the trees increase the value and beauty of the Glen. Lets get those hoses and sprinklers out and water! And thank you to the residents who are currently watering. SPRING PLANTINGS. Due to rain and a labor shortage, Living Color is behind in their schedule for new plantings. We therefore decided to cancel the Spring plantings ... these plantings will be done in the Fall. MEETINGS. The Landscape Subcommittee will not meet in July. The next meeting will be on Saturday, August 19th and will be the annual Fall walk-through. We encourage and invite all residents to join us. We will meet at 8am (no pajamas please) in Court 15. You have probably noticed the cable-laying activities in the Glen ... Arlington Cable TV is in the process of replacing current lines with fiber optics. We apologize for not informing you in advance; however, we received no warning of these activities. Arlington Cable TV is considered a utility by the County and can therefore come on the property without notice. The effort appears to be going well with little disruption to the residents or the landscape. However, if they have been in your area, please water any areas where the sod has been disturbed. Arlington health officials are asking residents to be more conscious of the need to eliminate mosquito-breeding places around their homes, as the region will have to contend with the Asian Tiger Mosquito again this year. There is also concern about signs that the West Nile Virus, which can be transmitted by mosquitoes to humans, may be moving further south. Everyone can help control mosquitoes by checking for breeding areas, especially in patios and under vegetation. Look for buckets, saucers on planting pots, neglected bird baths, children's wading pools, or other vessels that might hold stagnant water where mosquitoes can breed. If you see larvae (wigglers) in the water, you'll know they are breeding there. Also make sure water from drains is draining away from your unit and not standing in low spots. Eliminating heavy weed growth in patios can also help since mosquitoes are attracted to any such areas that stay moist.
TRASH/RECYCLING. There will be no trash or recycling pickup on Tuesday, July 4th. Trash pickup will resume on Wednesday, July 5th and recycling will resume on Tuesday July 11th. PARADE. Be sure to join the fun at Fairlington's Fourth of July Parade!! Kids, pets, and everyone else is welcome to participate or watch and wave. The parade will start at the Fairlington Fire Station at 10:45 and make its way to the North Fairlington Community Center. If you need more information, please call Tracy Darroch at 703-845-5825. See you there!! SATELLITE DISHES. Any co-owner wishing to install a satellite dish or other exterior antenna must submit an application to the Board for approval. The satellite dish or antenna can not be installed such that any portion shows above the top of the fence or is attached to any portion of the unit (both brick and windows). COMMON PLANT BEDS. Pots, trellises, or any other structure are not to be placed in common plant beds (including front beds). DOGS. Dogs are to be kept on a leash at all times. No dog is to be tethered to any object in the common areas. Dogs are not permitted to run free except in designated "off-leash" exercise areas in Arlington County. The closest dog exercise area to the Glen is currently at Utah Field. SPORTS EQUIPMENT. Personal sports equipment is not allowed on the common elements of the Glen. Please refrain from putting your children's sports items on the grass. HANDBOOK. All residents and co-owners should have a copy of the Fairlington Glen Handbook dated November 1999. Please review it occasionally since it provides essential information to ensure that you and your neighbors enjoy the wonderful experience of living in the Glen. All Glen meetings are held in the Fairlington Community Center at 3308 South Stafford Street. All residents are welcome.
