A list of tips residents can follow to have a spring free of injuries, provided by the Arlington County Fire Department, is attached. In addition, the Fire Department offers free home safety checks to Arlington residents. Please visit their website at http://www.co.arlington.va.us/fire/edu/safe_inspect.asp or call 703-228-4659 to make a request. Additional information and resources about fire/injury prevention can be found at http://www.co.arlington.va.us/fire/edu/edu.htm
An article on plant watering, provided by the Virginia Cooperative Extension Service, can be found at http://www.fairlington.org/watering.htm. In part it states that:
Watering plants and trees by residents is always welcome; however, current conditions have increased the need for watering and your help is appreciated.
Gayle Harris of the District of Columbia Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will speak at the North Fairlington Community Center on May 22nd at 7:30pm on the "History of the Boundary Stones (1791-1792)." In addition to the early history, Ms. Harris will outline current regional activities to establish ownership and maintain the stones. This will be the first public event sponsored by the Fairlington Historical Society for 2002. A fact sheet providing additional information is attached.
The Arlington County Farmers Market, located in the Arlington County Courthouse Parking Lot at the intersection of N. Courthouse Road and N. 14th Street, will open for the new season on April 20th from 8am-Noon.. Additional information, including a link to a chart of available vegetables and fruits can be found at http://www.arlingtonfarmersmarket.com/default.shtml
SPRING SPRUCEUP. Now that spring is upon us and folks are out and about, we should spruce things up a bit. Residents might want to consider replacing worn doormats and picking up hoses or other items strewn in plant beds. In addition, personal items (e.g., bicycles, scooters, baby carriages, toys) left in the common areas or on the front porches are unsightly and detract from the enjoyment of the community by your neighbors. Please make sure that these items are put away as soon as possible after use.
RED REFLECTORS. During the spring our landscape contractor will be a frequent and welcome presence. If you do not want the contractor to prune the shrubs around your unit, put a red reflector in the front bed. The contractor will continue to perform routine mulching and weeding, but shrub maintenance becomes a co-owner responsibility. If the shrubs are not properly maintained, the co-owner will be notified and will have 30 days to perform the necessary maintenance. If this is not done, the contractor will be directed to maintain the shrubs at the co-owner's expense.
PLANT BEDS. Pots, trellises, or other structures are not to be placed in any of the common plant beds including those in front of your unit. There is to be no edging around the plant beds other than that provided by the Glen's landscape contractor or, in a few cases (e.g., provide a retainer on a sloping area), through co-owner submission and Board approval of a landscape variance request. Additional information can be found in the Plant Bed Edging Policy (pages 4-7 and 4-8 of the Handbook).
EXTERIOR RODENT AND PEST CONTROL. The Glen has a contract with Triple "S" for exterior rodent control problems only. If you see mouse or rat droppings or have actually seen the critters, call 703-352-7738 and ask to speak to P.J. Gilmer. Do not call Ricky. Please do not try to get rid of them yourself; you may end up destroying wildlife which is harmless to you and the community. If you have an exterior general pest control problem (ants, termites, bees, wasps, yellow jackets, etc.) please call the maintenance office and leave a message for Ricky.
REPORTING PROBLEMS. If you have a problem or concern, you can contact the Ricky and the chairpersons of the Landscape Subcommittee and the Pool Committee by calling 703-820-9567. You can leave a message by pressing "1" for the Landscape Subcommittee, "2" for the Pool Committee, and "3" for Ricky. Please be courteous and don't call these people at home ... they will take care of your concerns as soon as possible. If you have an after-hours emergency maintenance problem or can not reach Ricky after a reasonable time, please call the Legum & Norman 24-hour emergency repair number ... 703-600-6000
HANDBOOK. All residents and co-owners should have a copy of the Fairlington Glen Handbook dated November 1999. Please review it occasionally since it provides essential information to ensure that you and your neighbors enjoy the wonderful experience of living in the Glen.
All Glen meetings are held in the Fairlington Community Center at 3308 South Stafford Street. All residents are welcome.
