POOL COMMITTEE
With all the rain this summer we are still having a terrific pool season. A few reminders:
• Let's all remember to pick up after ourselves. There are trash cans and recycling cans placed strategically around the pool area.
• Check the Lost and Found. It will be emptied soon.
Please check the bulletin board at the pool for new and upcoming events or changes to our events scheduled. At this writing our Glen pool calendar girl is on vacation so please add the following to your home calendar of "things to do":
• Sunday mornings (10-12): the Volleyball net is up! Enjoy a game.
• Saturday, August 14 - Movie Night - bring family and friends for an outdoor movie. Contributions will be accepted with a donation being made to a neighborhood nonprofit.
• Wednesday, August 18 (7pm) - Wine and Cheese Tasting - bring a bottle of wine or a snack to share and meet your neighbors at the pool.
• Friday, September 3 (9-11pm): Late Night Swim.
• Saturday, September 11 (4-7pm): End of the Year Party (rain date September 12). Bring a favorite dish to share. Margaritas for the adults and Snow Cones for the kids will be provided.
Future Possibilities.....We hope to have a demonstration by an Arlington Synchronized
Swim Team! Watch the bulletin board for date and time.
CRIME
The battle against crime involves both the police and citizens. It is a widely accepted fact that “police can not be everywhere”. For this reason, the effective functioning of a police department is dependent on citizen cooperation and their resistance to crime. Many crimes would never be committed if more citizens would be alert to suspicious activity and take it upon themselves to notify the police. We are lucky to live in a relatively crime-free area; however, we are not immune. If you see any suspicious activity, please take appropriate action.
CITIZEN’S POLICE ACADEMY
The Arlington County Police Department conducts two sessions of their Citizens' Police Academy annually in March and September. The classes will be held on Wednesday evenings for twelve weeks. Topics include search and seizure, laws of arrest, traffic enforcement/radar, firearm safety, gangs and K-9 uses. Participants will also be introduced to basic self-defense techniques. The next class starts on September 1, 2004. If you or anyone you know is interested in attending, please contact Sergeant Roger Stegall at 703-228-4247 or by e-mail at rstega@co.arlington.va.us

PERSONAL INSURANCE INFORMATION
A fact sheet from USI Insurance Services Corporation, providing information for unit owners regarding their personal insurance needs, is attached to this newsletter.
CHECK FOR LEAKS
Water leaks are expensive to the Glen and may waste thousands of gallons of water. Potential sources for leaks include washers in faucets and shower heads, washing machine hoses, ice maker lines, HVAC units, and dishwashers. It is recommended that residents inspect their homes quarterly. It is also prudent to equip showers, sinks, and tubs with drain screens to catch the debris, hair, and bits of soap that can cause clogs and back-ups.
During the quarterly inspection residents should check all exposed pipes for leaks and check all faucets for leaks or corrosion. Inspection of the rubber connecting hoses for dishwashers and washing machines is essential since, contrary to what some believe, such hoses do not last forever. Because these hoses wear from the inside out, a visual inspection will usually not reveal any worn spots and these hoses should generally be replaced every three to five years, or sooner if evidence of rot appears.
The most substantial loss of water can come from our bathroom toilets:
• Your toilet may have a leak at the overflow pipe if water is still running into the bowl or if water can be heard running after the tank has stopped filling.
• You may have a silent, plunger-ball leak. To test for a silent leak, drop some food coloring into the tank and wait ten minutes. If the food coloring appears in the toilet bowl there is a silent leak.
MAINTENANCE OFFICE EMAIL
Please remember that we now have email capability in the Maintenance Office. Residents are requested to use email for routine maintenance requests to ensure the maintenance staff has a clear understanding of the problem and the address and phone number of the affected resident. The email address is ricksolfg@aol.com. The phone (703-820-9567) is still available for emergencies or those without an email capability.

REMINDERS
DOGS. Dogs are to be kept on a leash at all times. No dog is to be tethered to any object in the common areas. Dogs are not permitted to run free except in designated “off-leash” exercise areas in Arlington County. The closest dog exercise area to the Glen is currently at Utah Field. Be sure to pick up the deposits left by your dogs. There are trash receptacles throughout the Glen where the bagged goodies can be deposited.
PARKING. Parking in all courts is restricted to lined spaces which are assigned to residents for their sole use. Parking is not allowed in court entrances, in fire lanes, or on lawns and sidewalks. Particular care should be taken if you are moving in or out of a unit ... make sure that you do not drive a trailer or other vehicle up on the grass. If you see this happening, please remind the resident and movers that it is not permitted. In addition, there have been instances where contractors and delivery personnel park in the courtyards while conducting their business. Please inform these personnel that the parking spaces are reserved and they need to park in the street.
HOSES. Please put hoses away as soon as you finish watering the grass and plants around your units. Hoses that are left out for extended periods are unsightly, a liability hazard for those walking or playing in the area, and an impediment to our landscape contractor during grass cutting and other efforts.
REPORTING PROBLEMS. You can contact Ricky and the chairpersons of the Landscape Subcommittee and Pool Committee by calling 703-820-9567. You can leave a message by pressing “1" for the Landscape Subcommittee and “2" for the Pool Committee. To leave a message for Ricky, wait for the tone at the end of the recorded message or press “9" or “#” to end the recorded message and go to the tone. Please be courteous and don’t call these people at home. If you have an after-hours emergency maintenance problem or can not reach Ricky after a reasonable time, please call the Legum & Norman 24-hour emergency repair number ... 703-600-6000
HANDBOOK. All residents and co-owners should have a copy of the Fairlington Glen Handbook dated November 1999. Please review it occasionally since it provides essential information to ensure that you and your neighbors enjoy the wonderful experience of living in the Glen.
