The following information on the use of live Christmas trees was provided by the Arlington County Fire Department:
"The State of Virginia has adopted the International Fire Code (Statewide Fire Prevention Code 2000 Edition) Fall 2003. Part of this new code does not allow the use of live natural cut trees (Christmas Trees) in non-sprinkled buildings. The exception of this code are Single-family homes, Duplex and Townhouses."
The Fire Department was contacted for clarification on the timing and applicability of the above and stated that there will be no enforcement this year ... only an education program will be undertaken. They also stated that next year's prohibition will apply only to residents of the B units; however, confirmation of this will be undertaken as we approach the 2004 holiday season.
Policy Resolution 03-01 regarding procedures relative to master insurance claims and losses was distributed to all Co-Owners last month. Please note that this is not a new policy, it is simply a clarification of Policy Resolution 02-01 (which it replaces) which has guided past actions by the Glen regarding claims. Basically, the Glen will submit claims to our insurance agent and the proceeds received from the insurance agent will be provided to the claimant. However, our insurance has a $5,000 deductible and this is the responsibility of the co-owner. There may be cases where a claim is so small that it would be inadvisable to submit it to our insurance agent since our rates could go up as a result. In these cases, the Glen would pay the co-owner the amount of the claim that exceeds the $5,000 deductible out of Glen resources rather than submitting the claim to the insurance agent.
The coupons for payment of condominium fees during 2004 have been mailed to Co-Owners and should therefore be available in time for your January payment. If you do not receive your coupons by the end of December, please call Barbara Walsh at Legum & Norman (703-848-4332).
Christmas trees that you would like to have hauled away should be placed at the curb on Tuesdays and Thursdays by 8am. Pickups will be made on January 6th, 8th, 13th, and 15th. After January 15th you will be responsible for disposing of them, so your cooperation would be appreciated.
The battle against crime involves both the police and citizens. It is a widely accepted fact that "police can not be everywhere". For this reason, the effective functioning of a police department is dependent on citizen cooperation and their resistance to crime. Many crimes would never be committed if more citizens would be alert to suspicious activity and take it upon themselves to notify the police. We are lucky to live in a relatively crime-free area; however, we are not immune. If you see any suspicious activity, please take appropriate action.
We now have email capability in the Maintenance Office.
