LANDSCAPE SUBCOMMITTEE

Our street trees are fragile and care must be taken so that nothing is done that will adversely affect them. Its been noted that some of our residents are placing the large items for trash pickup on the first Saturday of the month in the vicinity of these trees and thereby injuring their roots. PLEASE DON’T. Items for this trash pickup should only be placed at the entrance to your court in the vicinity of the court sign.

TRASH REMOVAL

The following was provided by Ron Patterson, a Fairlington resident and our webmaster, who is monitoring the ongoing activities related to the possible "take over" by the county of trash collection in "multi-family" areas which would include the Glen.

“Arlington County will begin consideration at its February 2005 Board Meeting (not January as previously reported in the All Fairlington Bulletin) the "take over" by the county of trash collection in "multi-family" areas. This will take place by means of a "franchising of commercial and multi-family (such as in Fairlington condo associations) refuse collection."

The FCA has this topic on its agenda for the December 14 Annual Meeting (See the December All Fairlington Bulletin). Scott MacDonald, Program Manager, Arlington County Environmental Management Office, will speak at the meeting. This proposal is contained in the County's "Solid Waste Management Plan" (SWMP) completed earlier this year.

Assistant County Manager Dottie Dake explained to me today that the County Board will consider advertising the franchising proposal at the February meeting and decide whether to proceed with the State-mandated five-year notice of intent. This means that the year 2010 is the earliest date for possible implementation of the franchising element of the Plan. Ms. Dake noted that the daily (6 days a week) trash collection schedule (where currently in place) would most likely continue under any new franchising operation.

According to Section 7. 1(2) of the SWMP: The County proposes to give, following an adequate preparatory interval after SWMP adoption, the State-mandated five-year notice of intent to implement solid waste franchising. The County would then propose to begin a comprehensive feasibility study on implementing solid waste franchising. Solid waste franchising could increase the County’s control of its waste stream, stabilize the tip fee at the Alexandria/Arlington WTE Facility so that all users of the WTE Facility pay the same fee for waste disposal, and generate revenues for solid waste programs. REMINDERS

CONDO FEE BOOK. Legum & Norman has mailed out the 2005 condo fee books. If you have not received your’s, please call Barbara Walsh at 703-848-4332.

SEWER LINES. While sewer backups are very infrequent due to the efforts of Ricky and his crew plus our sewer replacement efforts, they still occur. There were two recent backups and items that should not be flushed into the sewer lines were discovered. We need to support ongoing efforts by keeping items that contribute to sewer blockages and backups out of the sewer system so that neither you nor your neighbors have to experience a backup. Please be considerate by not putting sanitary napkins, dental floss, baby wipes, paper towels, condoms, tampons, or diapers down the commode ... our sewers are designed solely for human waste. In addition, please inform your guests, house sitters, babysitters, etc. that our sewer lines are fragile and must be treated accordingly.

REPORTING PROBLEMS. You can contact Ricky and the chairpersons of the Landscape Subcommittee and Pool Committee by calling 703-820-9567. You can leave a message by pressing “1" for the Landscape Subcommittee and “2" for the Pool Committee. To leave a message for Ricky, wait for the tone at the end of the recorded message or press “9" or “#” to end the recorded message and go to the tone. Please be courteous and don’t call these people at home. If you have an after-hours emergency maintenance problem or can not reach Ricky after a reasonable time, please call the Legum & Norman 24-hour emergency repair number ... 703-600-6000

HANDBOOK. All residents and co-owners should have a copy of the Fairlington Glen Handbook dated November 1999. Please review it occasionally since it provides essential information to ensure that you and your neighbors enjoy the wonderful experience of living in the Glen.
