December, 2005

To:  Co-Owners and Residents, Fairlington Glen

Dear Neighbor:

Our December 6 annual meeting was notable for its level of attendance and participation, with 61 percent present either through physical presence or by proxy.  This is very positive, as it shows the interest and concern our owners are showing in the village’s activities.  The newly constituted Board wishes to thank all of those involved in helping to make this a successful annual meeting.  In place of the newsletter this month, we thought a personal letter from the Board might be an effective means of communication.  We may use this approach more frequently in 2006.

As your new President, I would like to welcome our two new Board members—Alison Burns Trimble and Margaret Windus.  Both of them served on the Budget Work Group that I convened earlier this year and thus I know them well.  They will be an asset to the Board and the community because of their experience in and commitment to the Glen.

I would especially like to thank Mike Hahn and Paul Greenfield, retiring Board members, for their service on the Glen’s Board--Mike over 12 years and Paul over 3 years.  As President for the past 10 years, Mike has led the Board at a time of great change, with significant capital improvement programs having started during those years—roof replacement in 1995 and sewer lateral upgrading in 2000.  During this decade our patio fences were also totally replaced, as was the tot lot.  In a community where volunteers are always needed and sometimes scarce, he has stepped up to the plate in many ways that have benefited us all.  Paul Greenfield served not only as a Board member but also took over chairmanship of the Buildings and Grounds Committee for a year when it was without a chairman, and we appreciate his service on the Board.

In a brief meeting after the annual meeting, the Board met to elect its officers.  The new officers and their telephone numbers and e-mail addresses are:

President                      Robert Patrician             703-379-4379     bob.patrician@verizon.net

Vice President              John Fuller                    703-521-1835     fairlingtonglen@aol.com

Secretary                      Alison Burns Trimble      703-931-7096     alison@trimbles.net

Treasurer                       Margaret Windus           703-379-1718     bowindus@att.net

B&G Liaison                  Charles Robbins            703-998-6815     charles_robbins@hotmail.com

We have an open door policy in our meetings and activities so as to encourage the free exchange of ideas with our Co-Owners and residents.  The Board will continue to meet on the first Tuesday of each month and interested members of the Glen are invited to attend.  Our next two meetings are on December 13 and January 3 at 7:30 pm.  If you would like to receive the agenda by e-mail, please send your e-mail address to Alison Burns Trimble at alison@trimbles.net.    We plan to establish an e-mail list to inform those of you who would like to receive information about Glen activities by e-mail.  This will be the first among a number of changes we expect to make which will utilize technology to communicate more and more effectively here in the Glen.

Following is a new assessment schedule showing the results of the 5% assessment change.  This schedule takes effect January 1, 2006.  We will send you coupon books soon, but please send your correct payment even if the coupons should not arrive on time.  If you have automatic deduction, the new amount will be deducted effective January 1.  We encourage you to consider this option if you do not already do so—it is more cost-effective for the Glen and assures that your assessment is received on time.

Each Board member is a volunteer and is pledged to serve the best interests of the community.  As a Co-Owner or resident you are urged to contact any member of the Board with concerns or suggestions.  Please remember that our management agent, Sara Jones at Legum & Norman (240-450-5761 or sjones@legumnorman.com ), is available to handle your everyday needs, as is Ricky Solares, our facilities manager (703-820-9567 or ricksolfg@aol.com).

Effective January 1, those of you in the “B” buildings will notice a change in the cleaning of the common areas of your buildings.  Ricky and his staff (Nelson Ordonez and Maria Castro) will be taking over this responsibility.  While it means more work for the on-site crew, they are committed to making this change work. Please be supportive of them in their new responsibilities as we all adjust to the new system.

As the new Board takes office, we hope the interest the community has shown in this budget and election cycle will transfer to the volunteer activities within the village.  The Glen can best achieve its goals with the help of the many talented individuals in our very diverse community.  Please don’t hang up if we call you this year, as we may well do!  We look forward to working with you, to maintain the Glen both as a good investment and as a good place for all of us to live.  With everyone’s help, we can make 2006 one of the best in the Glen’s history.

                                                                        Sincerely,

                                                                        Bob Patrician

                                                                        President

                                                                        For the Board of Directors
