Fairlington Glen
No significant contractual actions.
There will be no Landscape Subcommittee meetings in January, February, and March. If you have any landscape concerns during this period you can leave a message for the Subcommittee by calling 703-820-9567 and pressing "1". Our walk-through to get ready for the spring plantings will be on Saturday, March 15, 2003 at 8:00 AM. We will meet in the big circle at 36th and S. Stafford. Anyone interested is invited to join us.
Christmas trees that you would like to have hauled away should be placed at the curb on Tuesday, January 14th, by 8am which is the last day for our scheduled pickups. After that day you will be responsible for disposing of them, so your cooperation would be appreciated.
The Arlington County Farmers' Market re-opened on January 4th as Arlington's Winter
Farmers' Market and will feature meats, cheeses, eggs, fruit and cider, baked goods,
farm-produced herbal soaps and mushrooms from many of the same popular farmers
who attend the market during the warmer months. There will also be a limited supply
of greenhouse produced vegetables. Though smaller, the market will be located in the
same place, on N. 14th Street at the intersection of N. Courthouse Road. The market
will open rain or shine. Re-opening in winter, which makes the market year-round, will
allow customers to purchase some of their favorite foods every week of the year.
Several of the producers raise their products without the use of pesticides or are
completely certified organic. This allows them a year-round market for sales while
giving consumers a year-round choice.
Ricky is on vacation ... his column will resume next month. In the meantime, Nelson and Maria are doing an excellent job keeping up with day-to-day matters and responding to resident requests. Please give them a call if you have any maintenance issues.
SEWER LINES. Sewer backups are an unpleasant occurrence and Ricky and his crew do everything possible to ensure they are an infrequent one. However, we need to support his efforts by keeping items that contribute to sewer blockages and backups out of the sewer system so that neither you nor your neighbors have to experience a backup. Please be considerate by not putting sanitary napkins, dental floss, baby wipes, paper towels, condoms, tampons, or diapers down the commode. In addition, please inform your guests, house sitters, babysitters, etc. that our sewer lines are fragile and must be treated accordingly.
INSURANCE. If you experience a sewer backup, the Glen's insurance policy only covers the cleanup of this mess. Any damage caused by this unfortunate incident is the residents' responsibility. It is therefore important for residents to have their own insurance to cover these types of disasters. Please check your policies to make sure that you will be covered for the replacement value of items if such an emergency occurs.
VARIANCES. Changes to a unit, including both exterior appearance and interior structural modifications, require permission from the Board prior to the start of work. If you desire to make any changes to your unit, please refer to Chapter 5 of the Fairlington Glen Handbook. If there is any doubt regarding the need for a variance, please check with the applicable individuals listed in the Handbook before taking action.
ILLEGAL PARKING. Towing is only allowed from your assigned parking space. You must have a towing code (call Barbara Walsh at 703-848-4332). Cars parked on the grass, double parked, parked in the entrances to the courts, or impeding the flow of traffic in the courts can only be towed by a Board member or an agent of Legum and Norman. Note that parking in front of the handicapped ramps to the sidewalks could result in a ticket from the Arlington Police, so play it safe and don't park there.
B-UNIT STORAGE. Bicycles and tricycles may be stored in the common hallways and basements of B-Units if all residents in the building agree and they do not block access to exits (some limit on the number may be imposed). No other items may be stored in the hallways or basements. In addition, nothing is to be affixed to hallway walls and plantings, furniture, etc. in the hallways is prohibited.
DOGS. Dogs are to be kept on a leash at all times. No dog is to be tethered to any object in the common areas. Dogs are not permitted to run free except in designated "off-leash" exercise areas in Arlington County. The closest dog exercise area to the Glen is currently at Utah Field.
RECYCLING. Materials that can be recycled are:
Please note the recycling of everything other than paper products does not need to be sorted prior to being placed in the containers. This is done after the recyclables are picked up so feel free to mix your glass, plastic, and aluminum. Please rinse all containers since containers with contaminants can not be recycled. Do not put recyclables in plastic bags.
ALLEYS. The alleys between courts are there for maintenance and emergency access. While residents can use the alleys for moving items from vehicles to units, parking for any length of time is prohibited and the vehicles are subject to being towed without notice.
REPORTING PROBLEMS. You can contact Ricky and the chairpersons of the Landscape Subcommittee and Pool Committee by calling 703-820-9567. You can leave a message by pressing "1" for the Landscape Subcommittee and "2" for the Pool Committee. To leave a message for Ricky, wait for the tone at the end of the recorded message or press "9" or "#" to end the recorded message and go to the tone. Please be courteous and don't call these people at home. If you have an after-hours emergency maintenance problem or can not reach Ricky after a reasonable time, please call the Legum & Norman 24-hour emergency repair number ... 703-600-6000
HANDBOOK. All residents and co-owners should have a copy of the Fairlington Glen Handbook dated November 1999. Please review it occasionally since it provides essential information to ensure that you and your neighbors enjoy the wonderful experience of living in the Glen.
All Glen meetings are held in the Fairlington Community Center at 3308 South Stafford Street. All residents are welcome.
