Fairlington Glen

NEWSLETTER July 2002

July 2ndTH BOARD MEETING

No significant contractual actions or community-wide decisions.

                                          LANDSCAPE SUBCOMMITTEE

The Landscape Subcommittee will not meet in July. Also, the Subcommittee will not meet on the second Tuesday in August. Instead, we will have our fall walk‑through on Saturday, August 17th. We will meet at the big traffic circle at 36th Street and South Stafford Street at 8am

                                            GLEN BUDGET COMMITTEE

If you are interested in serving on the Glen Budget Committee (which will be putting together the budget for 2003) please call Pat Phillips at 703-671-0868 no later than July 12th. The first Budget Committee meeting will be held in Room 1 at the Fairlington Community Center on South Stafford Street on July 19th at 7:30pm

                                               SEWER REPLACEMENT

The replacement of the sewer in the rear area of Courts 13 and 14 is scheduled to start on July 15th. Affected residents have been notified and will be kept updated the work progresses. Glen Board Member Pat Phillips will be assisting Ricky Solares in the oversight of this effort. Please feel free to contact Pat (703-671-0868) if you have any questions or problems as the project proceeds.

                                                         WATERING

Residents are requested to water the landscaped areas around their units. A number of new plantings have died recently due to lack of water. Particular attention should be paid to new plantings and the saplings along the Quaker Lane tree line which require water several times a week to ensure their survival. In addition, please water the lawns that border our beautiful street trees where the root structures grow. Watering the mulch under the trees or placing hoses next to the trunks does not allow the trees to take in any water ... placing a sprinkler along the front and side yards that border our trees allows the roots to receive water. Please help us ... this is your community and our landscaping increases the value and beauty of the Glen.

                                    MAINTENANCE OFFICE PHONE CALLS

If you need to contact Ricky or the chairpersons of the Landscape Subcommittee and the Pool Committee by calling 703-820-9567, please remember that your phone number and address are essential and must be understood. Please speak slowly when providing this information and consider repeating it to ensure it will be understood by those accessing your messages.

                                                    RICKY=S CORNER

$                   Installation of the new shutters in Courts 5-8 should be completed by July 19th. Residents of Court 8 are requested to keep their patio gates unlocked to allow the crew into the patio area for shutter installation.

$                   Preventive maintenance has been completed on all sewer laterals. Please be careful about what you put in the sewer system as discussed elsewhere in the newsletter.

                                                        REMINDERS

TRASH. Normal household trash must be put out during the week by 8am and on Saturdays by 9am. Please do not put trash out the night before pickup or on Sundays since this will only provide a temptation to rodents, birds, and other pests. In addition, please do not put your household trash in or near the community trash containers.

TRASH PICKUP FOR MAJOR ITEMS. Large items that you need to dispose of will be picked up on the first Saturday of every month. They must be placed on the curb at the street by 9 a.m. These pickups are free. Please do not put large items out at any other time ... THEY WILL NOT BE PICKED UP.

DOGS. Dogs are to be kept on a leash at all times. No dog is to be tethered to any object in the common areas. Dogs are not permitted to run free except in designated Aoff-leash@ exercise areas in Arlington County. The closest dog exercise area to the Glen is currently at Utah Field.

SEWER LINES. Sewer backups are an unpleasant occurrence and Ricky and his crew do everything possible to ensure they are an infrequent one. However, we need to support his efforts by keeping items that contribute to sewer blockages and backups out of the sewer system so that neither you nor your neighbors have to experience a backup. Please be considerate by not putting sanitary napkins, dental floss, baby wipes, paper towels, condoms, tampons, or diapers down the commode. In addition, please inform your guests, house sitters, babysitters, etc. that our sewer lines are fragile and must be treated accordingly.

RECYCLING. Materials that can be recycled are:

$                   Plastics with a 1 or 2 in the recycle symbol.

$                   Aluminum and tin cans with lids removed (aluminum foil is not acceptable).

$                   Mixed glass including clear, brown, and green bottles and jars (not household items such as china, light bulbs, drinking glasses, etc.). Please remove plastic caps and rings.

$                   Newspapers in paper bags or tied with string (not in plastic bags since this adds to the recycling expense). Magazines, newsletters, and other paper products and not acceptable.

$                   Broken down corrugated boxes.

Please note the recycling of everything other than paper products does not need to be sorted prior to being placed in the containers. This is done after the recyclables are picked up so feel free to mix your glass, plastic, and aluminum. Please rinse all containers since containers with contaminants can not be recycled. Do not put recyclables in plastic bags.

VARIANCES. Changes to a unit, including both exterior appearance and interior structural modifications, require permission from the Board prior to the start of work. If you desire to make any changes to your unit, please refer to Chapter 5 of the Fairlington Glen Handbook. If there is any doubt regarding the need for a variance, please check with the applicable individuals listed in the Handbook before taking action.

SATELLITE DISHES. Any co-owner wishing to install a satellite dish or other exterior antenna must submit an application to the Board for approval. The satellite dish or antenna can not be installed such that any portion shows above the top of the fence or is attached to any portion of the unit (both brick and windows).

REPORTING PROBLEMS. If you have a problem or concern, you can contact Ricky and the chairpersons of the Landscape Subcommittee and the Pool Committee by calling 703-820-9567. You can leave a message by pressing A1" for the Landscape Subcommittee, A2" for the Pool Committee, and A3" for Ricky. Please be courteous and don=t call these people at home ... they will take care of your concerns as soon as possible. If you have an after-hours emergency maintenance problem or can not reach Ricky after a reasonable time, please call the Legum & Norman 24-hour emergency repair number ... 703-600-6000

HANDBOOK. All residents and co-owners should have a copy of the Fairlington Glen Handbook dated November 1999. Please review it occasionally since it provides essential information to ensure that you and your neighbors enjoy the wonderful experience of living in the Glen.
