Fairlington Glen
NEWSLETTER June 2001
JUNE 5TH BOARD MEETING
The meeting was relatively short, and no major contract proposals or significant issues affecting all Glen residents and co-owners were discussed.
LANDSCAPE SUBCOMMITTEE
CONTROLLING MOSQUITOS. Mosquitos are not only a nuisance, but may carry diseases. A pamphlet, produced by the Virginia Department of Health, is attached which describes mosquito life cycle and habits, suggests ways to eliminate breeding sites, discusses the safe use of insect repellents, and lists web sites that contain additional information. Residents should do everything possible to help eliminate breeding sites including:
• flushing birdbaths and potted plant holder trays twice a week,
• eliminating standing water in your patio, and
• storing pet food and water bowls indoors when not in use.
WATERING. The lawn and tree care contracts do not include watering service. Please take the time to water our precious landscaping, especially any new trees or plants. Your efforts help keep our community attractive and maintain property values.
PESTICIDES. The use of pesticides by residents in the common areas is not permitted. The Glen has a “no pesticide” policy and any deviations from this policy (e.g., use of environmentally safe pesticides or situations requiring more extreme measures) will be implemented by our landscape contractor only after approval by the Board.
WALKTHROUGH. The July Landscape Walkthrough is scheduled to start at 8am on Saturday, July 28th, at the tree circle on South Stafford Street. Everyone is welcome to join us. If you have any concerns about landscaping or pruning near your home, please contact your court representative.
JUNE MEETING. The Landscape Subcommittee will not meet in June. The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, July 10th, at 7pm in the Fairlington Community Center.
LEGUM & NORMAN MOVE
Effective June 4th, Legum & Norman Corporate Headquarters will be located at:
Legum & Norman, Inc.
4401 Ford Avenue, Suite 1200
Alexandria, VA 22302
PLEASE NOTE. As part of this move, the Legum & Norman 24-hour emergency repair number has been changed to 703-600-6000. This number should be used if you have an after-hours emergency or can not reach Ricky after a reasonable time by calling 703-820-9567, pressing “3", and leaving a message.
ARLINGTON BICENTENNIAL CELEBRATION
An information sheet on the Arlington Bicentennial Celebration including programs in progress, accomplishments, and upcoming events and activities is attached.
GLEN BUDGET COMMITTEE
If you are interested in serving on the Glen Budget Committee (which will be putting together the budget for 2002) please call Pat Phillips at 703-671-0868. The first Budget Committee meeting will be in the Fairlington Community Center on South Stafford Street in Room 4 on July 5th at 6:30pm.
RICKY’S CORNER
• The painters are on schedule and have completed Court 1.
• The crew continues to install shutters once the painters are finished, and these efforts are on schedule.
• Preventive maintenance of sewers continues; however, your help in keeping things other than human waste out of the sewer lines is essential.
• Remember that large trash items will only be picked up on the 1st Saturday of the month.
REMINDERS
EXTERIOR RODENT AND PEST CONTROL. The Glen has a contract with Triple “S” for exterior rodent control problems only. If you see mouse or rat droppings or have actually seen the critters, call 703-352-7738 and ask to speak to P.J. Gilmer. Do not call Ricky. Please do not try to get rid of them yourself or call a company other than Triple “S”; you may end up destroying harmless wildlife. If you have an exterior general pest control problem (ants, termites, bees, wasps, yellow jackets, etc.) please call the maintenance office and leave a message for Ricky.
TRASH PICKUP FOR MAJOR ITEMS. Large items that you need to dispose of will be picked up on the first Saturday of every month. They must be placed on the curb at the street by 9am. These pickups are free. Please do not put large items out at any other time ... THEY WILL NOT BE PICKED UP.
SEWER LINES. Sewer backups are an unpleasant occurrence and Ricky and his crew do everything possible to ensure they are an infrequent one. However, we need to support his efforts by keeping items that contribute to sewer blockages and backups out of the sewer system so that none of us have to experience a backup. Please do not put sanitary napkins, dental floss, baby wipes, paper towels, condoms, tampons, or diapers down the commode. In addition, please inform your guests, house sitters, babysitters, etc. that our sewer lines are fragile and must be treated accordingly.
INSURANCE. If you experience a sewer backup, the Glen’s insurance policy only covers the cleanup of this mess. Any damage caused by this unfortunate incident is the residents’ responsibility. It is therefore important for residents to have their own insurance to cover these types of disasters. Please check your policies to make sure that you will be covered for the replacement value of items if such an emergency occurs.
LANDSCAPING IN COMMON AREAS. Residents should be aware of the Glen’s policies regarding landscaping in common areas. These policies, found in the Fairlington Glen Handbook on pages 4-7 and 4-8, address plantings in front and side beds, containers/hanging plants, plant bed edging, use of red reflectors, and vines.
PLEASE NOTE. Vines such as ivy are not allowed on building facades and fences due to the damage they cause. Co-owners will be responsible for any damage and will be asked to remove them. If the co-owners do not remove them, the Glen will do so at the owners’ expense.
REPORTING PROBLEMS. If you have a problem or concern, you can contact the Ricky and the chairpersons of the Landscape Subcommittee and the Pool Committee by calling 703-820-9567. You can leave a message by pressing “1" for the Landscape Subcommittee, “2" for the Pool Committee, and “3" for Ricky. Please be courteous and don’t call these people at home ... they will take care of your concerns as soon as possible. If you have an after-hours emergency maintenance problem or can not reach Ricky after a reasonable time, please call the Legum & Norman 24-hour emergency repair number ... 703-600-6000
HANDBOOK. All residents and co-owners should have a copy of the Fairlington Glen Handbook dated November 1999. Please review it occasionally since it provides essential information to ensure that you and your neighbors enjoy the wonderful experience of living in the Glen.
