Fairlington Glen
NEWSLETTER March 2001
LANDSCAPE SUBCOMMITTEE
The time for the monthly Landscape Subcommittee meetings has been changed to 7:00pm. Because of the Spring Walkthrough on March 10th, we will not be meeting on March 13th ... the next meeting will be on April 10th.
ACTIVITY CARDS
Activity card applications have been mailed to co-owners. No one will be allowed to use any recreational facility (pool, tennis courts, basketball courts, paddleball courts) after May 25th without the new cards. Applications must be submitted to Legum & Norman no later than April 15th. If you have tenants in your unit and want to transfer your right to use the recreational facilities to them, you must send the signed application to them for their completion and submission.
PAINTING CYCLE
Beginning later in March (weather permitting), Capitol Painting will return to Courts 1-4 to paint all exterior wood surfaces and replace broken and rotted wood in such areas as porch columns and porch ceilings. If you live in one of these four courts and feel that there is a problem, please call the maintenance office or your court representative to make sure that the problem is included on our list. Glen Board Member Bob Patrician will be assisting Ricky Solares in the oversight of this contract. Please feel free to contact Bob (703-379-4379) if you have any problems with the painting project as it proceeds.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR TRAFFIC STUDY
Twenty-four volunteers are needed on April 26th to develop baseline date on the amount of traffic that cuts through Fairlington. This was a concern raised in community discussions on the impact of Village at Shirlington redevelopment on Fairlington. If cut-through traffic increases due to the Village at Shirlington expansion, traffic measures can be implemented to lessen its impact on our neighborhood. Volunteers will record license tags for one hour during morning and afternoon rush hour periods. A short training session will be held some evening prior to April 26th. Please volunteer by April 10th by providing the Fairlington Citizens Association with your name, phone number, and email address at fairlingtoncitizensassociation@erols.com or 703-243-1735, Voice-Mail #1.
WALK/RUN
On April 14th, Arlington County Fire Station #7 is planning a 5k walk/run with the profits going to the Children’s Burn Camp. The event will start at 9am and will wind through the North and South Fairlington neighborhoods. This will result in temporary street closures and limited access for short periods of time during the morning. For planning purposes, the course for the event is as follows:
► Starts on S. 34th Street bridge over 395
► Proceeds north on S. Abingdon
► Left on S. 29th Street
► Left on S. Buchanan Street
► Left on S. 31st Street
► Right on S. Abingdon
► Right on S. 36th Street
► Left on S. Stafford Street
► Left on S. 32nd Road
► Left on S. Utah Street
► Right on S. 34th Street
► Continues across bridge onto S. Abingdon
► Finishes at S. 30th Street and S. Abingdon Street in front of the North Fairlington Community Center
INFORMATION FROM ARLINGTON COUNTY POLICE
• Recently a person was discovered peeping into a window of a house at night. The person fled before responding officers could apprehend him. Investigation revealed that the suspect moved an object in the backyard patio to a position underneath a window so he could stand on it and look in. He apparently didn’t notice that a key to the house was hidden under the object. It is unknown what would have happened had he made this discovery, but the lesson is to refrain from hiding house keys where they could be found by someone with criminal intent.
• Identity theft is an increasing problem. Be careful about the mail you leave at your home mailbox for the letter carrier to pick up. This mail can be easily stolen and, if checks are contained in the mail, provide a wealth of information to potential criminals. Mail sensitive items at the post office or neighborhood U.S. Postal Service mailbox. For more information check http://www.privacyrights.org and look for fact sheet #17.
• The Department of Motor Vehicles has a new, toll free number for customers to call for service. This number provides automated options for customers with routine inquiries. The number is:
1-866-DMVLINE
1-866-368-5463
• If you would like to report a malfunctioning street light, please call the County’s recorded telephone line at 703-228-6511. Be sure to have the address where the light is located and the pole number when you call.
• Another good number to remember is the Abandoned Auto Hotline. You can leave a message about a suspected abandoned auto and a member of the Parking Unit will mark it and tow it, if necessary. Please provide as much detail as possible. The number is 703-228-4144
RICKY’S CORNER
• Replacement of the roof in Court 8 has been completed. The replacement of the roof in Court 10 will commence shortly, weather permitting. We continue to work closely with the contractor to minimize the impact.
• The replacement of the Court 9 sewer line should commence in the near future. We will do everything possible to reduce the impact on the residents of the court.
• Preventive maintenance of the sewer laterals continues. Please remember not to put anything other than human waste in the toilets.
REMINDERS
DOG OWNERS. Please pick up the deposits left by your dogs ... “dey poop, you scoop”. There are trash receptacles throughout the Glen where the bagged goodies can be deposited.
VARIANCES. Changes to a unit, including both exterior appearance and interior structural modifications, require permission from the Board prior to the start of work. If you desire to make any changes to your unit, please refer to Chapter 5 of the Fairlington Glen Handbook. If there is any doubt regarding the need for a variance, please check with the applicable individuals listed in the Handbook before taking action.
REPORTING PROBLEMS. If you have a problem or concern, you can contact the Ricky and the chairpersons of the Landscape Subcommittee and the Pool Committee by calling 703-820-9567. You can leave a message by pressing “1" for the Landscape Subcommittee, “2" for the Pool Committee, and “9" for Ricky. Please be courteous and don’t call these people at home ... they will take care of your concerns as soon as possible. If you have an emergency maintenance problem and can not reach Ricky, please call the Legum & Norman 24-hour emergency repair number ... 703-734-0900
HANDBOOK. All residents and co-owners should have a copy of the Fairlington Glen Handbook dated November 1999. Please review it occasionally since it provides essential information to ensure that you and your neighbors enjoy the wonderful experience of living in the Glen.
