PARKING LOT REPAIRS. The Board approved a bid from Dominion Paving & Sealing for crack sealing, coating, and striping the parking areas in Courts 1, 2, 3, 6 and 16 at a cost of $6,548.
TENNIS COURT REPAIRS. The Board approved a bid from Sport Systems, Inc. for patching and coating the single tennis court at a cost of $3,725.
The Landscape Subcommittee will not meet on March 12th. The next gathering of the Subcommittee will be our Spring Walk-Through on Saturday, March 16th at 8:00a.m. We will meet at the traffic circle at 36th and S. Stafford Streets.
Activity card applications have been mailed to co-owners. No one will be allowed to use any recreational facility (pool, tennis courts, basketball courts, paddleball courts) after May 24th without the new cards. Applications must be submitted to Legum & Norman no later than April 12th. If you have tenants in your unit and want to transfer your right to use the recreational facilities to them, you must send the signed application to them for their completion and submission.
Capitol Painting will return to Courts 5-8 this Spring to paint all exterior wood surfaces and replace broken and rotted wood in such areas as porch columns and porch ceilings. If you live in one of these four courts and feel that there is a problem, please call the maintenance office or your court representative to make sure that the problem is included on our list. Glen Board Member Bob Patrician will be assisting Ricky Solares in the oversight of this contract. Please feel free to contact Bob (703-379-4379) if you have any problems with the painting project as it proceeds.
Water usage in the Glen continues to be high which is both expensive to the Glen and contributes to the possibility of a drought this summer. Please check all exposed pipes for leaks and check all faucets for leaks or corrosion. Inspection of the rubber connecting hoses for dishwashers and washing machines is essential since, contrary to what some believe, such hoses do not last forever. Because these hoses wear from the inside out, a visual inspection will usually not reveal any worn spots and these hoses should generally be replaced every three to five years, or sooner if evidence of rot appears.
The most substantial loss of water can come from our bathroom toilets:
The battle against crime involves both the police and citizens. It is a widely accepted fact that "police can not be everywhere". For this reason, the effective functioning of a police department is dependent on citizen cooperation and their resistance to crime. Many crimes would never be committed if more citizens would be alert to suspicious activity and take it upon themselves to notify the police. We are lucky to live in a relatively crime-free area; however, we are not immune. If you see any suspicious activity, please take appropriate action.
The Washington Regional Fire & Rescue Departments Aluminum Cans for Burned Children Program will sponsor the 2nd Annual Fairlington Firehouse 5K Race on Saturday, April 27th in Fairlington. A flyer is attached. If available, street closings will be published in next month's newsletter.
LOST: Small black CD case. The case is shaped like a CD and is approximately 1" thick. Last seen near the area of South 36th Street circle and Court 6. Very valuable to owner. Reward offered. Please call 703-282-7669.
PATIO TRASH. Spring is right around the corner and we appreciate residents taking care of their patios. However, please remember that any debris and trash placed outside the patio gate, near the community trash barrels, and on the lawn will not be picked up. Please keep these items in your patio overnight and place them in front of your unit for the morning trash pickup.
TRASH PICKUP FOR MAJOR ITEMS. Large items that you need to dispose of will be picked up on the first Saturday of every month. They must be placed on the curb at the street by 9 a.m. These pickups are free. Please do not put large items out at any other time ... THEY WILL NOT BE PICKED UP.
DOGS. Dogs are to be kept on a leash at all times. No dog is to be tethered to any object in the common areas. Dogs are not permitted to run free except in designated "off-leash" exercise areas in Arlington County. The closest dog exercise area to the Glen is currently at Utah Field. Please pick up the deposits left by your dogs. There are trash receptacles throughout the Glen where the bagged goodies can be deposited.
VARIANCES. Changes to a unit, including both exterior appearance and interior structural modifications, require permission from the Board prior to the start of work. If you desire to make any changes to your unit, please refer to Chapter 5 of the Fairlington Glen Handbook. If there is any doubt regarding the need for a variance, please check with the applicable individuals listed in the Handbook before taking action.
SATELLITE DISHES. Any co-owner wishing to install a satellite dish or other exterior antenna must submit an application to the Board for approval. The satellite dish or antenna can not be installed such that any portion shows above the top of the fence or is attached to any portion of the unit (both brick and windows).
ILLEGAL PARKING. Towing is only allowed from your assigned parking space. You must have a towing code (call Barbara Walsh at 703-848-4332). Cars parked on the grass, double parked, parked in the entrances to the courts, or impeding the flow of traffic in the courts can only be towed by a Board member or an agent of Legum and Norman. Note that parking in front of the handicapped ramps to the sidewalks could result in a ticket from the Arlington Police, so play it safe and don't park there.
REPORTING PROBLEMS. If you have a problem or concern, you can contact the Ricky and the chairpersons of the Landscape Subcommittee and the Pool Committee by calling 703-820-9567. You can leave a message by pressing "1" for the Landscape Subcommittee, "2" for the Pool Committee, and "3" for Ricky. Please be courteous and don't call these people at home ... they will take care of your concerns as soon as possible. If you have an after-hours emergency maintenance problem or can not reach Ricky after a reasonable time, please call the Legum & Norman 24-hour emergency repair number ... 703-600-6000
HANDBOOK. All residents and co-owners should have a copy of the Fairlington Glen Handbook dated November 1999. Please review it occasionally since it provides essential information to ensure that you and your neighbors enjoy the wonderful experience of living in the Glen.
All Glen meetings are held in the Fairlington Community Center at 3308 South Stafford Street. All residents are welcome.
