The project was completed with essentially no problems due to your efforts and understanding.

POOL NEWS

(Kari Doyle ... Pool Committee Chairperson)

The pool will open on Saturday, May 26th at 10:00am. Bring your suits, towels, activity cards, and join us. The water should be refreshing! The opening party will be held Sunday, June 3rd from 4-7pm. Watch for a flyer shortly before with all the details. Please review the rules of the pool in your Glen Handbook. That should help answer any questions about the use of the pool by our residents and guests. If you haven't received your activity card by May 18th please contact Legum and Norman, they will be happy to help you obtain your card. We are very happy to have World Pool Company with us again this year. They did a great job last year and we're looking forward to another safe and fun season.

LANDSCAPE SUBCOMMITTEE

The Landscape Subcommittee will not meet in May or June. The next meeting will be 7pm on July 10th in the Fairlington Community Center.

The trees and landscaping need water! Residents are our only back-up! One inch of water per week is needed for most plants during the growing season. Water deeply rather than sprinkling lightly. Put the water on a given area (with an oscillating sprinkler) for one to two hours or place a plastic container with a one-inch mark under the sprinkler.

Arlington County is taking a proactive stance towards the West Nile Virus (WNV), the mosquito-transmitted disease. According to the Spring 2001 Arlington County Citizen, a total of seven infected birds were found in Virginia during the fall of 2000, including one in Alexandria and one in Fairfax County. Residents are urged to continually survey their yards from now through fall for water-filled cans and lids, flower pot saucers, tires, birdbaths, and puddles that accumulate in tarps and plastic covers. The full article can be found at http://www.co.arlington.va.us/cmo/citisp01

COMCAST

On May 10th COMCAST will begin removing pedestals and burying cables. It is expected that these efforts will take approximately two weeks to complete. If, at the end of May, you feel there are remaining issues relative to COMCAST’s efforts, please email them to Michelle Casciato at mcasciato@legumnorman.com

ARLINGTON COUNTY NEIGHBORHOOD DAY

They will host their annual Twilight Tattoo Ceremony on Fort Myer as part of the event. The event is free and open to the public. The ceremony the Army’s long history of service to the nation. A related flier appears later in the Newsletter.

ITEMS FROM THE ALL FAIRLINGTON BULLETIN

HELP NEEDED. The Fairlington Citizens Association urgently needs assistance to increase the advertising in the All Fairlington Bulletin. The cost of publishing the Bulletin comes solely from the commercial and mini-ad revenue. For the past several months, the advertising revenue has been insufficient to cover the cost of publication. The FCA Executive Board has had to use limited reserves to cover the deficit. The Bulletin is hand-delivered monthly to the 3,449 Fairlington households and approximately 7,000 residents. It provides the only forum that reaches all residents and keeps them informed about available services and matters that affect the Fairlington community. Please volunteer to improve the financial health of the Bulletin. E-mail or call the FCA at: fairlingtoncitizensassociation@erols.com or (703) 243-1735, voice-mail Box #1.

QUAKER LANE PARKING MEETING. The parking problem on Quaker Lane between 33rd and 36th Streets will be discussed at the next meeting of the FCA on May 8 at 7:30 pm in Room 6 at the Fairlington Community Center. The Arlington County Traffic Engineering Division and the Police Department will present the results of their study on the effect of placing the "No Commercial Vehicle Parking" signs to reduce long-term parking of trailers, trucks, RV’s etc. The study was held in response to parking concerns raised by Fairlington residents at a Dec. 12, 2000 meeting, noting that the Arlington County side of Quaker Lane is zoned residential, and the overnight or all-day parking violates the intended use of Quaker Lane.

DOG PARK MEETING. In response to comments received, the FCA Executive Board has decided to hold a community meeting to discuss the impact that the Utah Field Dog Park has had on Fairlington residents. The meeting will be held June 12th. More information will be in the June All Fairlington Bulletin. Some of the concerns raised are:

dogs running loose on their way to and from the Park

dogs urinating and defecating on nearby residents' lawns and dog owners not cleaning up after the dogs.

                 excessive noise

                 increased automobile traffic

use of the Park by DC and Maryland residents

multiple dogs being brought by 'dog walkers' or pet care firms

cars blocking residents' cars and the roadway.

BASEMENT APARTMENTS. Homeowners who are considering renting the basement level of their townhouse should contact the Arlington County Community Code Enforcement Office, 2100 Clarendon Blvd. Suite 709, 703-228-3232, to find out the requirements. A rental space must comply with the zoning ordnance and meet the occupancy standards of Chapter 4 of the Building Officials and Code Administrators Property Maintenance Code regarding ceiling heights, room widths, etc. You may obtain a copy of Chapter 4 at the Arlington County Community Code Enforcement or at any Arlington County Library.

RICKY’S CORNER

It has been noted that some residents are attaching things (both decorative and plant life) to the shutters. The shutters are common elements and attaching things to them is not permitted. We will remove such items and are not responsible for resulting damage to the plant life.

We are in the process of performing preventive maintenance on all sewer laterals. Please remember not to put anything in your toilets other than human waste and toilet paper.

The gutters have all been cleaned; however, if you feel that your’s needs additional cleaning, please let us know.

Please remember that the Glen has a contract with Triple “S” for exterior rodent control problems. If you see mouse or rat droppings or have actually seen the critters, call 703-352-7738 and ask to speak to P.J. Gilmer. Do not call Ricky.

We appreciate the patience shown by residents affected by major contractual actions such as the replacement of the Court 9 sewer and Court 10 roof. With your help these efforts have been satisfactorily completed.

The painting contractor is currently in Court 1 and will be moving along to Courts 2-4. Please cooperate and follow their instructions. Note that front and back doors must be open for proper painting. The contractor will make arrangements with you for the painting of the doors and is working on Saturdays to cover units where no one is home during the week.

REMINDERS

PARKING. Parking in all courts is restricted to lined spaces. Parking is not allowed in court entrances, in fire lanes, or on lawns and sidewalks. Particular care should be taken if you are moving in or out of a unit ... make sure that you do not drive a trailer or other vehicle up on the grass. If you see this happening, please remind the resident and movers that it is not permitted. In addition, parking spaces in the courtyards are assigned to residents for their sole use. There have been instances where contractors and delivery personnel park in the courtyards while conducting their business. Please inform these personnel that the parking spaces are reserved and they need to park in the street.

FENCES. Fences are part of the common areas and must be treated accordingly. While the Glen repairs and replaces fences as needed, co-owners are responsible for damage caused by excessive wear and tear and other circumstances within the co-owner’s control. Examples of things that are not permitted are:

                 painting either inside or outside

                 attaching sheds

hooking planters over the top ledge

                 draping items over any portion

PLANT BEDS. Pots, trellises, or other structures are not to be placed in any of the common plant beds including those in front of your unit. There is to be no edging around the plant beds other than that provided by the Glen’s landscape contractor or, in a few cases (e.g., provide a retainer on a sloping area), through co-owner submission and Board approval of a landscape variance request. Additional information can be found in the Plant Bed Edging Policy (pages 4-7 and 4-8 of the Handbook).

REPORTING PROBLEMS. If you have a problem or concern, you can contact the Ricky and the chairpersons of the Landscape Subcommittee and the Pool Committee by calling 703-820-9567. You can leave a message by pressing “1" for the Landscape Subcommittee, “2" for the Pool Committee, and “9" for Ricky. Please be courteous and don’t call these people at home ... they will take care of your concerns as soon as possible. If you have an emergency maintenance problem and can not reach Ricky, please call the Legum & Norman 24-hour emergency repair number ... 703-734-0900

HANDBOOK. All residents and co-owners should have a copy of the Fairlington Glen Handbook dated November 1999. Please review it occasionally since it provides essential information to ensure that you and your neighbors enjoy the wonderful experience of living in the Glen.
