The Glen is in urgent need of temporary help in support of the maintenance staff. It is anticipated that this support will be a full-time effort (7am-3pm) for a period of one to two months starting as soon as possible. If you are 18 or older with a valid work authorization, please contact Ricky for additional details and to complete an application.
Effective immediately, it is necessary for Arlington County to cut off the main water valve whenever repairs are needed. If you have scheduled a plumbing repair that requires that the main water valve to the court be shut off, you must take the following steps:
If you have an emergency during working hours, call Ricky to cut off the water and he will notify the county. If you have an after-hours emergency, call the county at 703-228-6555 and leave a message for Ricky informing him of the problem and the actions taken. There will still be a $25 charge for emergency cutoffs.
PRE-SEASON EVENT. A pre-season pool beautification and pot-luck event will be held on Sunday May 19th at 4pm in order to plant the large potted plants around the pool and the entrance flower beds. Please see the attached flier for additional information.
OPENING/HOURS. The pool will open on May 25th. Pool hours are as follows:
ACTIVITY CARDS AND POOL RULES. Everyone should have received their activity card and a copy of the pool rules. Please review the rules with your household. Activity cards must come with you to the pool!
The Fairlington FINS, (Friends Interested in Neighborhood Swimming), is an instructional swim team for children ages 5-14 years. The program is for Fairlington residents only and runs from July 1st to July 26th. Practices are held at Fairlington pools (one pool each week) with a professional swim coach. Each week includes four afternoon practices Monday-Thursday 3:30-5:30 in 30-40 minute segments by age group and a Friday swim meet at 6:00. The Fairlington Glen Pool will be used the last week in July. The cost for the season is $40 per child on or before June 12th and $45 after that date. Up to 50 children can register on a first come basis. Registration forms will be available at the beginning of May via email or in person from Sue Shapiro or at the Fairlington Community Center (while supplies last). For questions or forms, please contact Sue Shapiro, 703-671-4098, email: dsha441642@aol.com. We are looking for assistant coaches to help out this year. Anyone interested, please contact Sue Shapiro.
You will soon be receiving a new insurance deductible resolution from Legum and Norman in the mail. This resolution describes the procedure for future insurance claims in the Glen. As you know, the deductible per claim went up to $2,500 last September and it may rise again this year. Please share this information with your insurance agent.
In the same mailing, you will receive two new handbook pages. One refers to the insurance deductible described above. The other covers fake down spouts that are used for hiding air conditioning wires and piping. Effective immediately such down spouts can only be installed in the patio area and must be secured to the existing gutter system.
Residents are requested to water the landscaped areas around their units. Particular attention should be paid to new plantings and the saplings along the Quaker Lane tree line which require water several times a week to ensure their survival. In addition, please water the lawns that border our beautiful street trees where the root structures grow. Watering the mulch under the trees or placing hoses next to the trunks does not allow the trees to take in any water ... placing a sprinkler along the front and side yards that border our trees allows the roots to receive water. Please help us ... this is your community and our landscaping increases the value and beauty of the Glen.
Starting in mid-July we will be replacing the sewer in the rear area of Courts 13 and 14. Affected residents will be informed prior to commencing work and will be kept updated as it progresses. Glen Board Member Pat Phillips will be assisting Ricky Solares in the oversight of this effort. Please feel free to contact Pat (703-671-0868) if you have any questions or problems as the project proceeds.
If you love plants and gardens and have an interest in improving the appearance of the Fairlington Community, you should visit the new "Fairlington's Gardening Advisor" web page (part of the Fairlington Communities website) at http://www.fairlington.org/gardenadvisor.htm. Thanks to Tom Corbin and Chuck Edwards for creating and maintaining this informative web page.
If you need to contact Ricky or the chairpersons of the Landscape Subcommittee and the Pool Committee by calling 703-820-9567, please remember that your phone number and address are essential and must be understood. Please speak slowly when providing this information and consider repeating it to ensure it will be understood by those accessing your messages.
As a reminder, Gayle Harris of the District of Columbia Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will speak at the North Fairlington Community Center on May 22nd at 7:30pm on the "History of the Boundary Stones (1791-1792)." In addition to the early history, Ms. Harris will outline current regional activities to establish ownership and maintain the stones. A flier on the event was provided in the April Glen Newsletter.
LANDSCAPING IN COMMON AREAS. Residents should be aware of the Glen's policies regarding landscaping in common areas. These policies, found in the Fairlington Glen Handbook on pages 4-7 and 4-8, address plantings in front and side beds, containers/hanging plants, plant bed edging, use of red reflectors, and vines.
PLEASE NOTE. Vines such as ivy are not allowed on building facades and fences due to the damage they cause. Co-owners will be responsible for any damage and will be asked to remove them. If the co-owners do not remove them, the Glen will do so at the owners' expense.
FENCES. Our fences are part of the common areas and must be treated accordingly. While the Glen repairs and replaces fences as needed, co-owners are responsible for the expense of damage caused by excessive wear and tear and other circumstances within the co-owner's control. Examples of things that are not permitted are:
COMMON AREA TREES. Trees in the common areas will be maintained by the Glen and its contractors, and residents are not authorized to prune them. In addition, these trees are not to be used as for recreation ... do not hang swings from them and see that your children are not climbing or defacing them. If a problem is detected, please notify the Landscape Subcommittee.
PATIO TREES. Patio trees are your responsibility. Please keep them trimmed so they do not impinge on the roofs or gutters. If you want to plant a tree in your patio area, you need approval from the Landscape Subcommittee to ensure it conforms with species appropriate to small spaces, and from Ricky to ensure that sewer and water lines are not affected.
SIDEWALKS. Many parents allow their children to draw on the sidewalks with chalk. This is acceptable; however, please ensure that the chalk is washed off the sidewalks once your children have finished their artistic endeavors.
SEWER LINES. Sewer backups are an unpleasant occurrence and Ricky and his crew do everything possible to ensure they are an infrequent one. However, we need to support his efforts by keeping items that contribute to sewer blockages and backups out of the sewer system so that neither you nor your neighbors have to experience a backup. Please be considerate by not putting sanitary napkins, dental floss, baby wipes, paper towels, condoms, tampons, or diapers down the commode. In addition, please inform your guests, house sitters, babysitters, etc. that our sewer lines are fragile and must be treated accordingly.
PESTICIDES. The use of pesticides by residents in the common areas is not permitted. The Glen has a "no pesticide" policy and any deviations from this policy (e.g., use of environmentally safe pesticides or situations requiring more extreme measures) will be implemented by our landscape contractor only after approval by the Board.
INSURANCE. If you experience a sewer backup, the Glen's insurance policy only covers the cleanup of this mess. Any damage caused by this unfortunate incident is the residents' responsibility. It is therefore important for residents to have their own insurance to cover these types of disasters. Please check your policies to make sure that you will be covered for the replacement value of items if such an emergency occurs.
GLEN APPEARANCE. The appearance of the Glen is something that should concern us all. Personal items (e.g., bicycles, scooters, baby carriages, toys) left in the common areas or on the front porches are unsightly and detract from the enjoyment of the community by your neighbors. Please make sure that these items are put away as soon as possible after use.
REPORTING PROBLEMS. If you have a problem or concern, you can contact Ricky and the chairpersons of the Landscape Subcommittee and the Pool Committee by calling 703-820-9567. You can leave a message by pressing "1" for the Landscape Subcommittee, "2" for the Pool Committee, and "3" for Ricky. Please be courteous and don't call these people at home ... they will take care of your concerns as soon as possible. If you have an after-hours emergency maintenance problem or can not reach Ricky after a reasonable time, please call the Legum & Norman 24-hour emergency repair number ... 703-600-6000
HANDBOOK. All residents and co-owners should have a copy of the Fairlington Glen Handbook dated November 1999. Please review it occasionally since it provides essential information to ensure that you and your neighbors enjoy the wonderful experience of living in the Glen.
All Glen meetings are held in the Fairlington Community Center at 3308 South Stafford Street. All residents are welcome.
