The Landscape Subcommittee will not meet in May or July. There will be a regular meeting on June 8th. The Fall Walk-Through has been scheduled for August 14th at 8am. Meet at the big traffic circle at S. Stafford and 36th Streets.

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS SUBCOMMITTEE

The Glen Board has approved the creation of a new subcommittee within the Standing Buildings and Grounds Committee. Please attend the next Buildings and Grounds meeting to hear more about upcoming events surrounding this topic. For now the subcommittee co-chairs are Libby Garvey at 703-820-3523 (garvey73@erols.com) or Alison Trimble 703-931-7096 (alisont@comcast.net).

On June 5th, Arlington County will be delivering a set of basic emergency preparedness materials to every household. These materials will help inform residents on how to respond to certain types of emergencies, where to get current information, what information residents and families should have handy, and what type of supplies should be readily available in case of emergency. To assist with that effort and to make the Glen better prepared for emergencies; a group of residents are beginning to plan a basic emergency preparedness system for the Glen.

You might want to consider becoming trained as a Citizen Emergency Response Team (CERT) member. Several Glen residents are already trained. One immediate goal of the Glen Emergency Preparedness Plan is to have one certified CERT team member per courtyard. In conjunction with the Glen Court Representative, having a CERT member in each court would go a long way in helping our community meet any emergency needs. If enough residents sign up for the training, we may be able to have a Fairlington Glen group trained at one time which would facilitate coordination and team building for our neighborhood.

Contact Kathy Free, who is a Glen resident and CERT qualified, at 703-933-0633 (kactus0594@yahoo.com) for more information on CERT training and requirements.

ARLINGTON LAUNCHES COUNTYWIDE DISASTER PREPAREDNESS

INFORMATION CAMPAIGN (April 26 Press Release)

ARLINGTON, Va. On June 5, an army of Arlingtonians will fan out across the County taking a single message door-to-door: Be Prepared. The effort "Arlington Prepares Door-to Door" will mobilize more than 800 volunteers to distribute emergency preparedness information to all 91,000 households in the County.

The goal is to help every household, neighborhood and business in Arlington prepare for community emergencies ranging from severe storms to acts of terrorism. The packets provide practical tips on being informed, developing emergency plans and getting involved in Arlington preparedness.

Arlington Prepares Door-to-Door is an important step in building communication, education and community based support so that neighbors can help neighbors in emergencies, said County Manager Ron Carlee at Saturday's County Board meeting. It's the best way we know of to get this vital information directly into the hands of those who need it. We urge all residents and businesses to "be prepared, make a plan, and get involved".

The County's Office of Emergency Management and the Citizen Corps Council [CCC] are seeking volunteers to distribute information or to help organize their neighborhood, building or workplace. Any resident, business, civic, service or homeowner association wishing to participate should call (703) 228-7188 or visit http://www.co.arlington.va.us/oem/door_to_door.htm

Information about the June 5 effort has been sent to about 100 condominium and homeowners associations, 60-plus civic associations, more than 100 of the largest apartment complexes, approximately 150 service organizations and about 300 businesses with 50 or more employees.

Other Arlington Prepares events this year will include partnerships with community organizations and businesses, disaster preparedness presentations and a community emergency exercise this fall.

ATTEMPTED BURGLARIES

There were two recent attempted burglaries in Court 1. On April 16, during work-day hours, a subject entered the patio of a unit, broke the pane of glass in the rear door nearest the lock, and reached in intending to turn the lock. Fortunately, the victim had not left the key stuck in the lock. The suspect desisted here and went to the front door of another unit in the same court where he used a screwdriver to make unsuccessful prying attempts against the upper deadbolt. Neither unit was entered. The police crime analyst judged the suspect to be likely inexperienced and not very determined.

Five days later at 12:25 p.m., an alert resident of Court 1 reported to police three subjects trying rear patio gates of units adjoining the tennis courts at Stafford/35th Sts. The subjects were described as black males, ages 15-20. These subjects departed the area via Quaker Lane prior to police arrival.

While not guaranteed to deter a burglary, the following tips are offered to at least lower the probability:

CHECK FOR LEAKS

Water leaks are expensive to the Glen and may waste thousands of gallons of water. Potential sources for leaks include washers in faucets and shower heads, washing machine hoses, ice maker lines, HVAC units, and dishwashers. It is recommended that residents inspect their homes quarterly. It is also prudent to equip showers, sinks, and tubs with drain screens to catch the debris, hair, and bits of soap that can cause clogs and back-ups.

During the quarterly inspection residents should check all exposed pipes for leaks and check all faucets for leaks or corrosion. Inspection of the rubber connecting hoses for dishwashers and washing machines is essential since, contrary to what some believe, such hoses do not last forever. Because these hoses wear from the inside out, a visual inspection will usually not reveal any worn spots and these hoses should generally be replaced every three to five years, or sooner if evidence of rot appears.

The most substantial loss of water can come from our bathroom toilets:

MAINTENANCE OFFICE EMAIL

Please remember that we have email capability in the Maintenance Office. Residents are requested to use email for routine maintenance requests to ensure the staff has a clear understanding of the problem and the address and phone number of the affected resident. The email address is ricksolfg@aol.com. The phone (703-820-9567) is still available for emergencies or those without an email capability.

PHONE LISTS

The two lists of Court Representatives and Important Phone Numbers are not current and will not be published in the Newsletter until they are updated. If you desire information regarding these lists, please contact Paul B. Greenfield at 703-820-9692 or at paul@paulgreenfield.com

RICKY'S CORNER

REMINDERS

POTTED PLANTS. You can plant flowers and small shrubs in containers but there are some restrictions. These containers can not be placed in common plant beds including those in front of your units, they can not obstruct pedestrian traffic in or out of units, and they must be carefully maintained with regular attention to watering and ensuring they do not become unsightly.

FENCES. Our fences are part of the common areas and must be treated accordingly. While the Glen repairs and replaces fences as needed, co-owners are responsible for the expense of damage caused by excessive wear and tear and other circumstances within the co-owner's control. Examples of things that are not permitted are:

COMMON AREA TREES. Trees in the common areas will be maintained by the Glen and its contractors, and residents are not authorized to prune them. In addition, these trees are not to be used as for recreation ... do not hang swings from them and see that your children are not climbing or defacing them. If a problem is detected, please notify the Landscape Subcommittee.

PATIO TREES. Patio trees are your responsibility. Please keep them trimmed so they do not impinge on the roofs or gutters. If you want to plant a tree in your patio area, you need approval from the Landscape Subcommittee to ensure it conforms with species appropriate to small spaces, and from Ricky to ensure that sewer and water lines are not affected.

REPORTING PROBLEMS. You can contact Ricky and the chairpersons of the Landscape Subcommittee and Pool Committee by calling 703-820-9567. You can leave a message by pressing "1" for the Landscape Subcommittee and "2" for the Pool Committee. To leave a message for Ricky, wait for the tone at the end of the recorded message or press "9" or "#" to end the recorded message and go to the tone. Please be courteous and don't call these people at home. If you have an after-hours emergency maintenance problem or can not reach Ricky after a reasonable time, please call the Legum & Norman 24-hour emergency repair number ... 703-600-6000

HANDBOOK. All residents and co-owners should have a copy of the Fairlington Glen Handbook dated November 1999. Please review it occasionally since it provides essential information to ensure that you and your neighbors enjoy the wonderful experience of living in the Glen.

MEETINGS

All Glen meetings are held in the Fairlington Community Center at 3308 South Stafford Street. All residents are welcome.
