PEST CONTROL

RATS. There have been sightings of rats in the Glen. The exterminator said that rats are a problem this year and the problem will grow if measures aren't taken to prevent access to food supplies. All residents should therefore:

Make access into homes difficult by putting screening around any ducts or holes in the outer walls.

Ensure that dog food and dog litter (or of any pet) is disposed of promptly. This includes both the common areas and your patios.

If you can not put garbage out for the regular pickup and store it on your patio, place it in a closed receptacle.

If you see any indications of a rat problem in your area, call Triple “S” at 703-352-7738. Please do not try to get rid of them yourself; you may end up destroying harmless wildlife.

TERMITES. While not a common Glen problem, one resident recently reported a case of termite infestation. Please be on the lookout for any indications of termites and call Ricky if you feel you have a problem. The Glen is responsible for exterior treatment of termites; however, termite inspections of your unit and unit repairs are your responsibility.

PREVENTING BURST WATER PIPES

Unless you live in a Braddock, please secure your outside faucets (front and back) in order to prevent burst water pipes when the temperature drops and the weather remains cold. In the Barcroft units there is one valve to control both faucets located above the hot water heater in the utility room. For other units there are two valves ... one behind the disposal under the sink for the patio faucet and one over the hot water heater in the utility room for the front faucet. To shut off the water, turn the inside valves off and open the outside valves in order to drain the pipes and keep them from freezing. Leave the heat in your unit on to at least 55 degrees (even when you are away) to prevent broken pipes.

FAIRLINGTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY

On Thursday, October 12th, the Fairlington Historical Society held its First Annual Meeting which included the election of the Board of Trustees. The meeting, which featured "An Evening with Catherine Fellows," was well attended (more than 65 residents and friends). The principal speaker was Catherine Fellows, author of Fairlington at 50, a history of our community. The event was held at the North Fairlington Community Center.

Elected to the Board were Sandy Hodapp, Ron Patterson, Terry Placek, David Manning, and Cindy Kunz. Ms. Fellows reminisced about her experiences during the construction and evolution of Fairlington. Her historical and often humorous perspective of events from the early 1940's through the conversion in the mid-1970's held the attention of the attendees.

On September 18, 2000, the IRS approved tax exempt status for the society. Contributions are now deductible. The FHS is approved as a "Publicly Supported Tax Exempt Organization" under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, effective July 12, 2000.

Residents interested in becoming a member of the Society may contact Ron Patterson at (703) 931-0687 or ronaldp755@aol.com. Membership fees for the year 2001 are: Charter (voting) members - $10.00 annually; Associate member - $10.00 annually; Corporate member - $100.00 annually; and Honorary member (selected by the Board) - no fee. Membership forms may be obtained from Ron or from Fairlington's web site - http://www.fairlington.org - under "What's Hot" on the home page.

RICKY’S CORNER

A sewer backup recently occurred in Court 5. We are doing everything possible to ensure that backups are infrequent; however, we need your support. Please do not put anything in the toilets other than toilet paper. Our sewer lines are fragile and must be treated accordingly. In addition, watch what you put in the garbage disposal. If a blockage of pipes within your unit occurs, it is your responsibility.

The quarterly preventive maintenance of all sewer laterals was completed in October. Problem laterals will continue to be done on a monthly basis.

All of the gutters have been cleaned. During the rest of the year gutters will be cleaned as necessary. If you feel that your gutters need to be cleaned, please call Ricky and provide the address of the unit.

There has been some concern regarding the baby swing in the playground. The swing had to be replaced temporarily and efforts are underway to purchase the permanent replacement.

Please call the maintenance office if you have any maintenance problems and the crew will address them as soon as possible.

REMINDERS

THANKSGIVING DAY. Thanksgiving Day is Thursday November 23rd. Please do not put trash out since it will not be picked up. Regular trash pickup will continue on Friday, November 24th. Have a wonderful holiday.

REPORTING PROBLEMS. If you have a problem or concern, you can contact Ricky and the chairpersons of the Landscape Subcommittee and the Pool Committee by calling 703-820-9567. Leave a message by pressing “1" for the Landscape Subcommittee, “2" for the Pool Committee, and “9" for Ricky. Please be courteous and don’t call these people at home ... they will take care of your concerns as soon as possible. If you have an emergency maintenance problem and can not reach Ricky, please call the Legum & Norman 24-hour emergency repair number ... 703-734-0900

HANDBOOK. All residents and co-owners should have a copy of the Fairlington Glen Handbook dated November 1999. Please review it occasionally since it provides essential information to ensure that you and your neighbors enjoy the wonderful experience of living in the Glen.
