ANNUAL MEETING

The Annual Meeting will be held on November 7th in the Fairlington Community Center. You should have received your meeting package including proxy forms. Please return the proxy forms as soon as possible, whether or not you plan on attending, to ensure the necessary quorum to conduct business. Proxies must be sent to Legum & Norman by October 29th or given to your Court Representative or a Board member before the meeting. Please follow the instructions for completing the proxy since failure to do so will disqualify it. Your proxy is important, so please return it promptly.

INSURANCE

As reported last month, the insurance deductible on the Glen's Master Policy has increased to $5,000 per occurrence. "Building" or "Dwelling" coverage normally covers appliances, fixtures, alterations, improvements and other items of real property contained within or pertaining exclusively to a unit and insures an owner against damage to their unit over their personal policy deductible, which is commonly $250. Many personal homeowners (HO-6) policies automatically include this coverage; however, the coverage varies significantly ... from none up to a limit of $5,000 or more. If not automatically provided but available, the annual premium charge to purchase the coverage is relatively nominal.

All co-owners should contact their insurance agents to advise them of the change to the Glen's Master Policy and ensure that you carry coverage for the difference between the deductible on your homeowner's policy (e.g., $250) and the Glen's $5,000 deductible. Otherwise, you may find yourself paying for damages up to $5,000 for floods, leaks, fires or other losses. The coverage under an HO-6 policy to cover repair or replacement cost of damage within a unit owner's unit below the Glen's Master Policy deductible is not something unique or difficult to obtain; however, since the levels of coverage provided vary widely, co-owners should confirm with their personal insurance agent and/or company that their HO-6 policy provides this coverage.

COMCAST CABLE INSTALLATIONS

Comcast crews have started to use bright orange cable wiring for new installations rather than the black that had been used in the past. This is not acceptable as it creates a garish look. Legum & Norman has requested that Comcast change the orange wires that have been installed to black and discontinue use of more orange wiring. If you have cable work done by Comcast, please request that they use black wiring.

CRIME STATISTICS

The following crime statistics are for August 2002. The first number is for the Third District and the second number is for the County:

Homicide 0/0
Rape 2/2
Robbery 5/13
Aggravated assault 2/10
Burglary 11/45
Larceny from auto 63/142
Larceny of auto 36/68
Exposure 1/3
Peeping Tom 0/0
Sexual assault 1/7

In both of the reported rape cases, the assailant was known to the victim. Arrests have been made in two of the five robbery cases and there are no discernible patterns in the others. Arrests have also been made in several of the reported burglary cases, including a break-in at the Dollar Store located in the 4800 block of Columbia Pike. Four juveniles have been charged with a break-in/vandalism that occurred at Kenmore Middle School on August 9th. Three of the other burglaries were committed in the Nauck community in late August and early September and a local resident was arrested and charged in those cases.

Auto related crimes continue to be the most prevalent in the district with Honda Accords and Jeep Cherokees being the vehicles of choice. One of the recently stolen vehicles was from the Glen. The Police Department is sponsoring a vehicle safety day on Saturday, October 12th at the Thomas Jefferson Middle School from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Theft prevention and child safety seat installation will be two of the main focuses at this event.

FAIRLINGTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY ANNUAL MEETING

Great news about the republication of Fairlington at 50, exciting plans for Fairlington's 60th Anniversary Celebration for 2003, and Board elections are featured in the Fairlington Historical Society's (FHS) annual meeting in October. All residents are invited to attend this event which is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 24, 2002, at the South Fairlington Community Center.

The FHS has been working with Catherine Fellows, the author of Fairlington at 50, and the Fairlington Citizens Association (FCA) to reissue the 1993 history of Fairlington. The FHS Board will have an announcement regarding this all-important project at the Annual Meeting. The FHS is also establishing a planning committee which will include other Fairlington associations in organizing a series of activities and events to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of Fairlington in 2003. Preliminary plans for this celebration will be announced at the Annual Meeting. Residents interested in assisting with the Celebration are encouraged to attend this meeting and to volunteer in planning for these events.

Two members of the FHS Board of Trustees are up for reelection this year. Sandy Hodapp, current Treasurer, and Ron Patterson, current President, will be running for reelection. The election will be held at this meeting. All interested residents are welcome to run for these Board positions.

During the meeting, the Board will present the FHS's annual report for 2002.

Questions about the Annual Meeting can be referred to Ron Patterson at 703-931-0687 or email at ronaldp755@aol.com

RICKY'S CORNER

REMINDERS

KITCHEN SINK BACKUPS. If you experience a backup of your kitchen sink, do not assume that the Glen is responsible ... most sink backups are the result of clogged pipes within the unit. The best way to determine where the fault lies is to flush the basement toilet. If it flushes properly, the backup is not a sewer problem and the co-owner is responsible for all efforts required to clear the backup. You should coordinate with your neighbors regarding both the repairs and what should and should not be placed in the sink drain since you probably share a common pipe.

REPORTING PROBLEMS. You can contact Ricky and the chairpersons of the Landscape Subcommittee and Pool Committee by calling 703-820-9567. You can leave a message by pressing "1" for the Landscape Subcommittee and "2" for the Pool Committee. To leave a message for Ricky, wait for the tone at the end of the recorded message or press "9" or "#" to end the recorded message and go to the tone. Please be courteous and don't call these people at home. If you have an after-hours emergency maintenance problem or can not reach Ricky after a reasonable time, please call the Legum & Norman 24-hour emergency repair number ... 703-600-6000

HANDBOOK. All residents and co-owners should have a copy of the Fairlington Glen Handbook dated November 1999. Please review it occasionally since it provides essential information to ensure that you and your neighbors enjoy the wonderful experience of living in the Glen.

MEETINGS

All Glen meetings are held in the Fairlington Community Center at 3308 South Stafford Street. All residents are welcome.
