AUGUST 22ND BOARD MEETING

TRASH PICKUP. Trash pickup has been extended to cover all holidays except for New Year's day, Thanksgiving day, and Christmas day at no additional cost to the Glen.

INSURANCE POLICY. It was agreed to renew our master condominium insurance policy with Morgan & Cheves for another year at a cost of $27,881.

GLEN BOARD CANDIDATES

There are two seats (three-year terms each) on the Glen Board of Directors that will be filled at the November 14th annual meeting. If you are a co-owner interested in running for the Board and wish to have your candidacy included in the "annual meeting package" please complete a "Candidate Profile" form. Forms can be obtained from Mike Hahn (4270-A2 S. 35th Street, 703-578-3138) and must be returned to him by September 30th.

Candidates should be willing to expend significant time and energy serving the Fairlington Glen community. The Board is responsible for managing a large condominium property with a large budget and a diverse community of people. Some of the responsibilities of a Board member include the following:

  • attend monthly Board meetings
  • be "on call" by the community seven days a week at any hour
  • may entail attending B&G meetings once a month as Board Liaison, preparing the annual budget, reviewing financial records, and/or preparing the monthly Glen newsletter and the Glen Ready Reference
  • POOL NEWS
(Kari Doyle ... Pool Committee Chairperson)

LABOR DAY POOL PARTY. Remember to join us on Monday September 4th from 4pm to 7pm. Bring a "south of the border" side dish to share and your happy dancing feet. We'll provide the rest.

PING PONG TOURNAMENT. As mentioned last month, the 1st ANNUAL FAIRLINGTON PING PONG TOURNAMENT will be held at the pool on Saturday or Sunday, September 2nd/3rd. There will be three age categories for competition:

    Children (Age 8 - 12)
    Teenagers (Age 13-17)
    Adults (You know who!)
We will be providing prizes for the top three finishers in the Children and Teenage Groups as well as something for the adult Champion. The entry fee will be $1.00 per contestant. There will be as sign up sheet on the bulletin board by the lifeguard's table. If you need further information or would like to help in this effort please call Arturo Lopez at (703) 379-0736.

    RICKY'S CORNER

  • The crew is replacing the shutters in Courts 13-16. Please note that this will require the use of ladders in your patio areas. Weather permitting, this effort should be completed by early September.
  • The next big project for the crew will be the replacement of the fence around Court 4.
  • While the sewer line replacement project is underway and standard maintenance of the lines continues including the use of Root Destroyer, the possibility of backups is always present. Please do not put sanitary napkins, dental floss, baby wipes, paper towels, condoms, tampons or diapers down the commode, and inform your guests, house sitters, babysitters, etc. that our sewer lines are fragile and must be treated accordingly.
  • The crew doesn't work at night so they are often unaware of burnt out light bulbs in the courtyards. If you notice that a light is out, please call Ricky and provide the Court number so the problem can be rectified.
  • It has been observed during inspections by the B&G Committee, Landscape Subcommittee, and Court Reps that construction materials and personal items are being stored outside of patio fences, on porches, and in plant beds. Storage in the common areas is not permitted ... if items are not removed when requested, the crew will dispose of them.
  • We have a contract with Triple "S" (703-352-7738) to take care of exterior rodent problems. If you note a problem, please call them rather than Ricky.
  • REMINDERS

FENCES. Our fences are part of the common areas and must be treated accordingly. While the Glen repairs and replaces fences as needed, co-owners are responsible for the expense of damage caused by excessive wear and tear and other circumstances within the co-owner's control. Examples of things that are not permitted are:

  • painting either inside or outside
  • attaching sheds
  • hooking planters over the top ledge
  • draping items over any portion

  • COMMON AREA TREES. Trees in the common areas will be maintained by the Glen and its contractors, and residents are not authorized to prune them. In addition, these trees are not to be used as for recreation ... do not hang swings from them and see that your children are not climbing or defacing them. If a problem is detected, please notify the Landscape Subcommittee.

PATIO TREES. Patio trees are your responsibility. Please keep them trimmed so they do not impinge on the roofs or gutters. If you want to plant a tree in your patio area, you need approval from the Landscape Subcommittee to ensure it conforms with species appropriate to small spaces, and from Ricky to ensure that sewer and water lines are not affected.

DECORATIVE ITEMS. Decorative items such as garden decorations, statues and other pottery figures, signs, etc. will not be displayed on front porches, plant beds, or other common areas. Please express your decorating talents in your patio area.

TRASH PICKUP FOR MAJOR ITEMS. Large items that you need to dispose of will be picked up on the first Saturday of every month. They must be placed on the curb at the street by 9 a.m. These pickups are free. Please do not put large items out at any other time ... THEY WILL NOT BE PICKED UP.

RECYCLING. Materials that can be recycled are:

  • Plastics with a 1 or 2 in the recycle symbol
  • Aluminum and tin cans with lids removed (aluminum foil is not acceptable).
  • Mixed glass including clear, brown, and green bottles and jars (not household items such as china, light bulbs, drinking glasses, etc.). Please remove plastic caps and rings.
  • Newspapers in paper bags or tied with string (not in plastic bags since this adds to the recycling expense). Magazines, newsletters, and other paper products and not acceptable.
  • Broken down corrugated boxes.
  • Please note the recycling of everything other than paper products does not need to be sorted prior to being placed in the containers. This is done after the recyclables are picked up so feel free to mix your glass, plastic, and aluminum. Please rinse all containers since containers with contaminants can not be recycled. Do not put recyclables in plastic bags.

REPORTING PROBLEMS. If you have a problem or concern, you can contact the Ricky and the chairpersons of the Landscape Subcommittee and the Pool Committee by calling 703-820-9567. You can leave a message by pressing "1" for the Landscape Subcommittee, "2" for the Pool Committee, and "9" for Ricky. Please be courteous and don't call these people at home ... they will take care of your concerns as soon as possible. If you have an emergency maintenance problem and can not reach Ricky, please call the Legum & Norman 24-hour emergency repair number ... 703-734-0900.

HANDBOOK. All residents and co-owners should have a copy of the Fairlington Glen Handbook dated November 1999. Please review it occasionally since it provides essential information to ensure that you and your neighbors enjoy the wonderful experience of living in the Glen. WEBMASTER'S NOTE: The Handbook is also available on the web (click here).
