This is a great little program and one of the best kept secrets in Arlington.

It is an Arlington County Recreation Department-sponsored program for 3-5 year olds that meets Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. There is only one class (a maximum of 16 children) involved in the program at any given time.

Because it is so small and is not advertised by the County, very few people know about it! The lead teacher is an experienced elementary and preschool teacher. The class meets in a very large classroom area on the lower level of the Community Center with its own interior restrooms and full kitchen.

The children have free playtime on the adjacent large playground and have access to the Center’s gymnasium for bad weather days. The curriculum consists of story time, lessons on weather, customs, and other topics, learning songs, daily art and craft projects, snack time, and outdoor playtime.

In past years, the teachers organized several field trips that were enjoyed tremendously by the kids and parents who attended. The class went to Great Harvest Bread bakery, Oxon Hill Farm, and a pumpkin patch. A variety of holiday parties and parades were also enjoyed by all.

Although this is the only non-cooperative Recreation-sponsored preschool in the County, the parents and families of the preschoolers have become quite close and often do activities together outside of the regularly scheduled school activities.

If you are interested in this program, please call the Arlington County Recreation Department at (703) 228-4747.
