Developer Submits Shirlington Plans by Nancy Hunt, At the developer's request, the presidents of the Fairlington/Shirlington condominium associations, the Fairlington Citizens Association, the Claremont and Nauck Civic Associations, and the area's Neighborhood Conservation representative were invited to brain storm about the kind of design they would like to see in expansion of the Village At Shirlington. The discussion focused mainly on the two large apartment buildings, the live/work space, and the retail space that was approved in the Phased Site Development Plan last fall. At the meetings, the community representatives provided feedback to Federal Realty Investment Trust representatives and the architects from Torti and Gallas. The developer expects to file initial plans for these buildings with Arlington County on January 26 and final plans on February 9. If the developer meets these filing dates, the Site Plan Committee would begin reviewing the plans in late February and the plans could be on the County Board agenda on May 19. At the end of the second community meeting, the developer introduced the builder and architect for the second office building, which would be across the street from Charlie Chiang and the parking structure now under construction. The builder and architect are the same people who are building the office building many of us have dubbed "the Monument building". The builder expects to submit the next office building plans in early May. As for the library/theater building, the County is apparently in discussions with developer and Signature Theater. As yet, however, the County has not offered to include the community in the discussions. Those of you who are interested in the library discussion might be interested in logging on the Westover library Web site (http://www.co.arlington.va.us/forums/plan.htm) sponsored by Arlington County to see the County's outreach to this North Arlington community. So far, I am not aware of any such outreach to Shirlington, Fairlington, Claremont, or Nauck by the County.
