2003 HOME AND GARDEN TOUR

(Page Added May 2, 2003)

Home Descriptions

1.  3444 SOUTH STAFFORD STREET
(Patio Only)

With partial sunlight/partial shade, plantings vary according to their needs. Ferns and perennial greenery thrive in the cool, shady part of the garden. Various shades of green, leaf textures and shapes, and plant heights create interest. Annuals are added as color accents Numerous amphibians seem to like the garden ambiance! Good luck in spotting the owner’s collection of 33!

2.  3469-B SOUTH STAFFORD STREET (DOMINION)

This beautifully decorated three-story townhouse uses toile fabric on furniture and drapes. Crown molding dresses up the living and dining rooms. The bathrooms have been remodeled, as has the kitchen, which contains two pantries. An electric fireplace warms the family room. A wood deck covers the large patio and additional gardens containing a bench and ornamentals are outside the fence and along the side.

3.  3513-B SOUTH STAFFORD STREET (DOMINION)

Renovations by the homeowners update and creatively open up the space in this light and airy Dominion. Highlights include an enlarged, completely renovated kitchen, separate dining room, remodeled bathroom, a redesigned master bedroom suite that combined two bedrooms into one creating enormous closet space, and a  newly landscaped patio.

4.  3577-A SOUTH STAFFORD STREET (CLARENDON)

“Have nothing in your houses which you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.” – William Morris.  The residents of this unit follow this philosophy and take pride in the fact that their home reflects their interests in art and design, travel, history and the expressive use of color.  Features include their open kitchen, renovated downstairs bathroom and colorful surprises upstairs.

5.  4127 SOUTH 36TH STREET
(CLARENDON)

As a “work in progress” this creative Clarendon has a nearly finished 4th floor complete with skylights and a full bath.  Come by and view the “bones” before it’s completed.  Also, there is a stunning lower level with French doors to the den.

6.  4421 SOUTH 36TH STREET
(CLARENDON)

This homeowner welcomes you to her home that features a unique, two-door kitchen.  Decorated in a light Victorian style, this open-air end-Clarendon flows nicely to a beautiful patio that is inviting and wonderful for lazy afternoons with good company.

7.  4425 SOUTH 36TH STREET
(DOMINION)

This spectacular renovation features custom cabinets, granite countertops and a double- entrance gourmet kitchen.  French doors in the dining room lead to the patio and plantation shutters throughout add charm and graciousness. The lower level has also been redone to complete the comfortable yet elegant look of this home.

8.  4426 B-1 SOUTH 36TH STREET (BRADDOCK)

A beautifully renovated attic expands the space in this home by adding an upstairs bedroom, bath, and den with high ceilings. A Murphy bed on the main floor creatively creates a multi-use room - a necessity in Fairlington!

9.  4506 A-2 SOUTH 36TH STREET (BARCROFT)

Faux painting and stenciling enhance this two-story apartment.  Notice the kitchen cabinets with faux marbling.  Crown molding adds charm to the apartment as does the chair rail and mirrored display cabinet in the dining room.  There is a large landscaped patio.

10.  3613 SOUTH WAKEFIELD STREET (DOMINION)

This Dominion underwent major kitchen remodeling to include upscale cabinetry, appliances and redirection of the basement stairs to provide direct access from the living room. The patio features a deck that provides wonderful additional space for entertaining.  The owner completed this home’s decor with faux-painting accents.

NOTE: HOME WITHDRAWN FROM TOUR

11.  4404 SOUTH 34TH STREET (ARLINGTON)

(Main Level Only)  An unusual Mediterranean, contemporary design opens up the kitchen and dining room.  Relocating the lower level stairs to the living room allows the kitchen more cabinets and space for a double sink.

12.  4624 SOUTH 34TH STREET
(EDGEWOOD)

(Main Level Only)  The owners have combined period Empire and Victorian furnishings to create an inviting setting.  Of special interest are an 1825 Philadelphia dining table, a set of centennial Chippendale-style chairs, an 1815 classical, New York sofa, and an Empire card table attributed to Philadelphia cabinet maker Anthony Quervelle.  The patio features a large camellia, boxwood edgings, and seasonal plantings.  An English-style border surrounds the residence.

13.  2855 B-1 SOUTH ABINGDON STREET (ASHLAWN)

This rare Ashlawn model is tastefully decorated with elegant Southern charm.  The first level features 2 spacious bedrooms as well as a large kitchen.  An office loft, accessed by a spiral staircase, overlooks the living room.  To expand the home even more, storage space on that level has been renovated to create a comfortable bonus/guest room.

14.  2874 A-2 SOUTH ABINGDON STREET (BARCROFT)

The homeowner has transformed the small kitchen into an oasis of beautiful cabinets, brushed nickel appliances, glass tile and inviting lighting.  Beautiful marble tile transforms the bathroom into a spa!  An inviting balcony/patio provides outdoor access.

15.  2874 B-2 SOUTH ABINGDON STREET (BRADDOCK)

This Braddock offers an array of recently renovated rooms, from the fiesta-style kitchen to the bright and cheery bathroom. Renovated Pergo floors run through the kitchen and dining room, down the hall to the completely refurbished bathroom. The color scheme is very inviting. This unit has also been described in the Virginia Housing Development Authority (VHDA) 2002 Community Report.

16.  4722 SOUTH 29TH STREET
(DOMINION II)

This attractively decorated three-story townhouse has a rare feature: a large patio on the side in addition to a smaller patio at the rear. The remodeled kitchen has a breakfast bar and is an open floor plan to the dining room.

17.  2994 A-1 SOUTH COLUMBUS STREET (BARCROFT)

Innovative decorating highlights this two-story apartment. Faux painting enhances the living and dining rooms as does a hand blown glass light fixture in the hall. The remodeled kitchen has a stucco technique on the walls. The bedroom reflects an Asian influence. The remodeled patio is enhanced by a fountain.

18.  3046 A-1 SOUTH BUCHANAN STREET (MONTICELLO)

(Main Level Only)  This spacious Monticello unit features recently renovated kitchen and bath.  The “cook’s” kitchen features red birch cabinets, double ovens, silestone counter tops, and an owner- constructed the slate floor.  The modern bath continues the birch cabinetry and features a spacious walk-in shower. Visitors will want to note the elevated “bowl” sink.  Recently refinished floors and natural wood trim add warmth to the bright living and dining areas which open onto the balcony.
