Re:  Proposed water main .improvements in Fairlington

Dear Ms. Hunt:

In your role as the Fairlington Citizens Association President, I am writing this letter to notify you and your civic association members of the three upcoming water main improvement projects in your area (see attached location maps), namely:

1. South Buchanan Street - from 29th St. S. to 31st St. S.

2. Abingdon Elementary School - from S. Abingdon St. towards
the school and connecting to 29th Street South

3. South Utah Street, 36th Street South and South Stafford
Street - from 34th Street South to 35th Street South.

The purpose of these proposed water main projects is to replace and upsize, from 6-inch to 12-inch diameter, the existing water pipes. These three water main projects and the recently concluded water pipe cleaning in your areas were identified and implemented to resolve the fire flow deficiencies in some parts of Fairlington and neighboring areas.

I am coordinating the water work with the proposed traffic calming project at the intersection of South Buchanan Street and 29th Street South. Thus, I am designing and preparing the South Buchanan Street water main improvement project ahead of the other two water projects. The current plan is to install the proposed water main prior to installing the traffic calming measures. I am projecting that the water main along South Buchanan Street can be installed and completed before the end of this year.

The other two water main projects should be ready for construction in 2004. The water main improvement on Abingdon Elementary School is being coordinated with schools facilities engineers and will be installed and completed during the of 2004 while the students are out of school.

The Construction Management Section of the Department of Public Works will be managing all these water projects. Prior to start of construction, the assigned County Construction Manager will notify you and the affected residents along the project frontage.

During construction, roadways will be subject to periodic restrictions, which will be kept to a minimum. Additionally, temporary interruption of water service may occur.  Residents
affected by water service interruptions will be notified in advance.

I would appreciate if you disseminate this information to your civic association members.

If you have any questions about these projects, please feel free to contact me at (703) 228-3657.

                                                            Sincerely,

                                                            Juan R. Javier
